Claims
- 1. An assembly for forming openings in a plastic part within a mold tool before removing the plastic part from the mold tool, comprising;
a cavity formed by said mold tool having an interior surface; a punch pin driven into said cavity by a drive assembly for forming an opening in said plastic part; and a bore disposed within said mold tool opposite said punch pin for accepting waste material removed by said plastic part.
- 2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein said bore includes a backing pin disposed within said bore and movable between locked and unlocked positions, said backing pin in said locked position during molding of said plastic part and in said unlocked position to accept said waste material from said plastic part after molding of said plastic part.
- 3. The assembly of claim 2, wherein said backing pin and said punch pin each includes a face disposed flush with said interior surface of said cavity during molding of said plastic part.
- 4. The assembly of claim 2, wherein said backing pin is held in said locked position by a locking assembly.
- 5. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said locking assembly includes a holder pin blocking movement of said backing pin in said locked position.
- 6. The assembly of claim 5, wherein said locking assembly further includes an actuator to move said holder pin into position to block movement of said backing pin.
- 7. The assembly of claim 4, wherein said locking assembly includes a driving rod attached to an actuator for movement relative to said mold tool.
- 8. The assembly of claim 7, wherein said driving rod includes a key way disposed at an angle relative to movement of said backing pin.
- 9. The assembly of claim 8, wherein said backing pin includes a key portion slidably disposed within said key way of said driving rod such that movement of said driving rod moves said backing pin between said locked and unlocked positions.
- 10. The assembly of claim 9, wherein said driving rod is attached to a plate movable relative to said mold tool and said actuator moves said plate to actuate said driving rod.
- 11. The assembly of claim 1, further including an ejection mechanism to eject said plastic part along with said waste material from said mold tool.
- 12. The assembly of claim 11, wherein said ejector mechanism includes a head section movable to eject said plastic part, said backing pin and bore are disposed within said head section and movable therewith.
- 13. The assembly of claim 12, wherein said head section moves upward to align said bore and backing pin with an ejector pin, said ejector pin pushes said backing pin to eject said waste material.
- 14. The assembly of claim 1, wherein said drive assembly is a pneumatically actuated cylinder.
- 15. The assembly of claim 1, wherein said drive assembly is a hydraulically actuated cylinder.
- 16. A method of forming an opening in a molded plastic part within a mold tool comprising the steps of:
a. introducing plastic into a mold cavity to form the plastic part; b. locking a backing pin and a punch pin in a locking position such that a face of the backing pin and the punch pin are flush to a surface of the mold cavity during molding of the plastic part; c. unlocking the backing pin after said plastic part has solidified; and d. driving the punch pin through said plastic part forming the desired opening.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further including the step of receiving waste material punched from said plastic part within a bore opposite said punch pin.
- 18. The method of claim 16, wherein said backing pin slides away from the surface of the mold cavity within the bore to receive the waste material.
- 19. The method of claim 18, further including retracting the punch pin from said plastic part.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further including the step of ejecting said plastic part and said waste material from said mold tool.
