Claims
- 1. A padding or lining material for an orthopedic device used for bracing or fixation comprising a textile fabric, said textile fabric having a base plane, wherein a multiplicity of projections comprised of said textile fabric rises above said base plane, wherein said projections are resilient, returning substantially to their original shape after being compressed to 50% of their original height, said textile fabric comprising thermoplastic filaments wherein said thermoplastic filaments are monofils having a diameter of at least 0.1 mm.
- 2. The padding or lining material for an orthopedic device as recited in claim 1, said projections having apex points or flat tops, wherein said apex points or flat tops define a surface.
- 3. The padding or lining material for an orthopedic device as recited in claim 1, wherein said thermoplastic filaments consist essentially of a single thermoplastic polymer or copolymer.
- 4. The padding or lining material for an orthopedic device as recited in claim 3, wherein said thermoplastic polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 5. The padding or lining material for an orthopedic device as recited in claim 1, wherein said filaments in said fabric cross over one another at intersections, wherein said filaments at said intersections are not bonded.
- 6. The padding or lining material according to claim 1, wherein said textile fabric comprises a bacteriacide.
- 7. The padding or lining material according to claim 1, wherein said material is in the form of a sheet stock.
- 8. A medical cast padding material comprising a textile fabric, said textile fabric having a base plane, wherein a multiplicity of projections comprised of said textile fabric rises above said base plane, wherein said projections are resilient, returning substantially to their original shape after being compressed to 50% of their original height, said textile fabric comprising thermoplastic filaments wherein said thermoplastic filaments are monofils having a diameter of at least about 0.1 mm.
- 9. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said thermoplastic filaments consist essentially of a single thermoplastic polymer or coplymer.
- 10. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 9, wherein said thermoplastic polymer has a melting temperature in the range of about 80.degree. C. to about 375.degree. C.
- 11. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 9, wherein said thermoplastic polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 12. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 9, wherein said thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, nylon 6, nylon 66, and polyethylene.
- 13. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, said projections having apex points or flat tops, wherein said apex points or flat tops define a surface.
- 14. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said filaments in said fabric cross over one another at intersections, wherein said filaments at said intersections are not bonded.
- 15. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein the apparent density of said material is less than about 10% of the density of said thermoplastic fiber.
- 16. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said fiber network also comprises depressions.
- 17. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, said filaments having a diameter in the range of about 0.1 mm to about 0.25 mm.
- 18. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said projections are about 4 to about 5 mm in height and about 9 to about 10 mm in diameter.
- 19. The medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said textile fabric includes a bacteriacide.
- 20. A medical cast padding comprising the medical cast padding material recited in claim 8, for use with a rigid outer cast.
- 21. A medical cast padding material as recited in claim 8, wherein said material is pre-cut into a shape for use in a specific application, said material optionally including fasteners.
