Claims
- 1. A medical coupling site valve element comprising:
- a body portion including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion, said body portion defining a longitudinal axis;
- a diaphragm extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- means defining a slit extending diametrically across said diaphragm, said slit including opposing ends; and
- ribs formed integrally with said diaphragm and extending radially inwardly from said inner wall to locations adjacent to said ends of said slit to prevent said diaphragm from tearing adjacent to said slit when a male luer is inserted into said site through said slit.
- 2. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said diaphragm and said ribs are formed of an elastomeric material.
- 3. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said body portion is formed of an elastomeric material.
- 4. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said ribs intersect and lie parallel to a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending parallel to said slit.
- 5. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said ribs are located between said diaphragm and said second body portion end.
- 6. The valve element of claim 1, including two ribs located on diametrically opposite sides of said inner wall and extending radially inwardly toward respective ends of said slit.
- 7. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said diaphragm has a convex inner face facing toward said second body portion end and said ribs extend radially inwardly to intersect said convex inner face.
- 8. The valve element of claim 1, including a biasing rib intersecting and lying parallel to a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending perpendicular to said slit.
- 9. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said ribs each include opposing side wall portions extending from said inner wall substantially parallel to a plane extending parallel to said slit.
- 10. The valve element of claim 9, wherein said opposing side wall portions comprise substantially planar walls.
- 11. A medical coupling site valve element comprising:
- a body portion formed of an elastomeric material, said body portion including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion;
- a diaphragm formed integrally with said body portion and extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- 12. The valve element of claim 11, wherein said diaphragm and said ribs are formed of an elastomeric material.
- 13. The valve element of claim 11, wherein said ribs extend from an inner face of said diaphragm toward said second body portion end.
- 14. The valve element of claim 13, wherein said inner face is convex.
- 15. The valve element of claim 11, wherein said ribs each include opposing side wall portions extending from said inner wall substantially parallel to a plane extending parallel to said slit.
- 16. The valve element of claim 15, wherein said opposing side wall portions comprise substantially planar walls.
- 17. A valve element comprising:
- a tubular body portion formed of an elastomeric material and including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion, said body portion defining a longitudinal axis;
- an elastomeric diaphragm formed integrally with said body portion and extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- means defining a slit extending diametrically across said diaphragm and including opposing slit ends in spaced relation to said inner wall; and
- first and second elastomeric stiffening ribs formed integrally with said diaphragm and said body portion, said stiffening ribs extending radially inwardly from opposing sides of said inner wall and terminating adjacent to respective slit ends, said stiffening ribs acting to prevent said diaphragm from tearing adjacent to said slit ends and facilitating alignment of adjoining surfaces defining said slit.
- 18. The valve element of claim 15, including first and second elastomeric biasing ribs formed integrally with said diaphragm and said body portion, said biasing ribs extending radially inwardly from opposing sides of said inner wall in a direction perpendicular to said stiffening ribs and terminating adjacent to said adjoining surfaces defining said slit, said biasing ribs acting to bias said adjoining surfaces together to close said slit.
