Claims
- 1. A medical coupling site valve element comprising:
- a body portion including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion, said body portion defining a longitudinal axis;
- a diaphragm extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- means defining a slit extending diametrically across said diaphragm; and
- a biasing structure formed integrally with said diaphragm extending from a location on said inner wall to a location adjacent to said slit wherein said location on said inner wall is spaced from a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending parallel to said slit, said biasing structure being located within said body portion between said diaphragm and said second body portion end for biasing said slit closed.
- 2. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said diaphragm and said biasing structure are formed of an elastomeric material.
- 3. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said biasing structure comprises ribs located on opposing sides of said plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending parallel to said slit, said ribs intersecting and lying parallel to a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending perpendicular to said slit.
- 4. The valve element of claim 3, wherein said ribs have a width dimension in a direction parallel to said slit less than an interior diameter of said valve defined by said inner wall.
- 5. The valve element of claim 3, wherein said ribs each include opposing substantially planar walls extending perpendicular to said plane extending parallel to said slit.
- 6. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said diaphragm has a convex inner face facing toward said second body portion end and said biasing structure extends radially inwardly toward and is connected to said convex inner face.
- 7. The valve element of claim 1, wherein the dimension of said biasing structure in a direction parallel to said longitudinal axis decreases in a direction from said inner wall to said slit.
- 8. The valve element of claim 1, wherein said body portion is formed of an elastomeric material.
- 9. A medical coupling site valve element comprising:
- a body portion formed of an elastomeric material, said body portion including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion;
- a diaphragm formed integrally with said body portion and extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- means defining a slit extending diametrically across said diaphragm; and
- a biasing structure formed integrally with said diaphragm extending from a location on said inner wall to a location adjacent to said slit wherein said location on said inner wall is spaced from a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending parallel to said slit, said biasing structure acting to bias said slit closed.
- 10. The valve element of claim 9, wherein said diaphragm and said biasing structure are formed of an elastomeric material.
- 11. The valve element of claim 10, wherein said biasing structure comprises at least one rib.
- 12. The valve element of claim 9, wherein said biasing structure comprises at least one rib extending from and inner face of said diaphragm toward said second body portion end.
- 13. The valve element of claim 12, wherein said inner face is convex.
- 14. The valve element of claim 9, wherein said biasing structure includes ribs, said ribs including substantially planar walls extending perpendicular to said plane extending parallel to said slit.
- 15. A medical coupling site valve element comprising:
- a tubular body portion formed of an elastomeric material and including first and second body portion ends and inner and outer walls defining an interior and an exterior of said body portion, said body portion defining a longitudinal axis;
- an elastomeric diaphragm formed integrally with said body portion and extending diametrically across said body portion interior at said first body portion end;
- opposing slit edges formed in said diaphragm defining a slit extending diametrically across said diaphragm; and
- first and second elastomeric biasing ribs formed integrally with said diaphragm and said body portion, said biasing ribs extending radially inwardly from locations on opposing sides of said inner wall and terminating adjacent to respective ones of said slit edges wherein said locations on said inner wall are spaced from a plane containing said longitudinal axis and extending parallel to said slit, said biasing ribs acting to bias said opposing slit edges together and said biasing ribs moving radially outwardly in response to insertion of a male luer through said slit.
- 16. The valve element of claim 15, wherein said biasing ribs are located between said diaphragm and said second body portion end.
