Claims
- 1. A prosthetic tubular graft for surgical implantation in animals comprising a tube which is formed totally or in part of one or more copolymers having at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the General Structure I: ##STR7## and having at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the Structure II: ##STR8## wherein: n is from 1 to about 8; and
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl with the proviso that when said copolymers are block copolymers at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is other than hydrogen.
- 2. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein n is 1 to about 3.
- 3. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen or alkyl.
- 4. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 3 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen or alkyl having from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms.
- 5. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 4 wherein the recurring monomeric units of the Structure II are derived from a lactide.
- 6. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 5 wherein the recurring monomeric units of the Structure II are derived from d-lactide, l-lactide or d,l-lactide.
- 7. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein the amount of the recurring monomeric units of the Structure I in said copolymer is at least about 75 wt. % based on the total weight of recurring monomer units.
- 8. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 7 wherein said amount is at least about 85 wt %.
- 9. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 8 wherein said amount is from about 85 wt % to about 99 wt %.
- 10. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 9 wherein said amount is from about 90 wt % to about 99 wt %.
- 11. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein said copolymer is a random copolymer.
- 12. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein said copolymer is a block copolymer.
- 13. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 12 wherein said block copolymer has an AB or an ABA structure wherein A is a block of recurring monomeric units of the Structure I or of the Structure II, and B is a block of recurring monomeric units of the Structure I, the Structure II or a random block of recurring units of the Structure I and II, with the proviso that when A is composed of units of the Structure I, B is composed of units of the Structure II or is a random block, and that when A is composed of units of the Structure II, B is composed of units of the Structure I or is a random block.
- 14. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 13 wherein said block copolymer is a block copolymer of the structure ABA.
- 15. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein said graft is fabricated wholly from one or more of said copolymers.
- 16. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein said tube is an extruded tube formed of one or more of said copolymers or is a non-woven or woven fabric tube formed of fibers formed from one or more of said copolymers.
- 17. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 1 wherein said graft is formed partially from one or more of said copolymers.
- 18. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 17 wherein said graft comprises a tube coated with one or more of said copolymers, said tube formed from a biodurable polymeric material or bioresorable polymeric material other than said copolymer.
- 19. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 18 wherein said tube is an extruded tube or is a woven or non-woven fabric tube.
- 20. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 19 wherein said tube is formed of a biodurable polymeric material.
- 21. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 13 wherein said tube is formed of a bioresorbable polymeric material.
- 22. A prosthetic tubular graft for surgical implantation in animals selected from the group consisting of vascular grafts, nerve channels, and wound closing or covering devices comprising a tube which is formed totally or in part of one or more copolymers having at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the General Structure I: ##STR9## and having at least one type of recurring monomeric unit of the Structure II: ##STR10## wherein: n is from 1 to about 8; and
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen, alkyl or phenyl with the proviso that when said copolymers are block phenyl with the proviso that when said copolymers are block copolymers at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is other than hydrogen.
- 23. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 22 wherein the recurring monomeric units of the Structure II are derived from lactide.
- 24. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 23 wherein the amount of recurring units of the Structure II in said copolymer is at least about 75 wt % based on the total weight of recurring monomeric units.
- 25. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 24 which is a vascular graft.
- 26. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 24 which is a wound closing or covering device.
- 27. A prosthetic tubular graft according to claim 24 which is a nerve channel.
RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application is a division, of application Ser. No. 467,067, filed Jan. 18, 1990, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,066,772, which in turn is a divisional of U.S. application Ser. No. 226,706, filed on Aug. 1, 1988, which issued as U.S. Pat. No. 4,916,193. This application is a continuation-in-part application of U.S. patent application Ser. Nos. 134,321 now U.S. Pat. No. 4,891,263 and 134,339 now U.S. Pat. No. 5,120,802, each filed Dec. 17, 1987.
