Claims
- 1. A polymeric film having a film surface for retaining fluid comprising a film having a predetermined texture made from a predetermined pattern of fluid-retaining cells on the film surface, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, pressure forming and molding.
- 2. The polymeric film according to claim 1, wherein the film is non-porous and comprisesa first section having a first texture and a second section having a second texture different from the first texture, said second texture comprising a predetermined pattern of cells to enhance fluid control and retention.
- 3. The polymeric film according to claim 1, wherein the film retains an amount of fluid equal to about three times the weight of the film.
- 4. A back table cover compromising the drape of claim 3.
- 5. A Mayo stand cover compromising the drape of claim 3.
- 6. A medical drape comprising the film of claim 1.
- 7. A medical drape according to claim 6, further comprising:a first polymeric film having a first texture and a second polymeric film having a second texture, said second texture being a predetermined pattern of cells.
- 8. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second film is a separate sheet oriented to cover a central portion of the first film.
- 9. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second film further comprises additives.
- 10. The drape according to claim 9, wherein the additives are surfactants.
- 11. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second film is treated to be hydrophilic.
- 12. The drape according to claim 11, wherein the second film is corona treated.
- 13. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second film is adhered to the first film by an adhesive.
- 14. The drape according to claim 13, wherein the adhesive is a pressure sensitive adhesive selected from the group consisting of water based, hot melt based and solvent based adhesives.
- 15. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the first film is a polymeric material selected from the group consisting of LDPE, LLDPE, ULLDPE, plastomer and blends thereof.
- 16. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second film is a polymeric material selected from the group consisting of HDPE, polypropylene, plastomer, LLDPE, ULLDPE and blends thereof.
- 17. The drape according to claim 7, wherein the second polymeric film has a film weight and is able to retain an amount of fluid in excess of about three times the film weight.
- 18. The medical drape according to claim 7, the film retains an amount of fluid equal to about three times the weight of the film.
- 19. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the cells are hexagonal.
- 20. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the cells have a predetermined volume.
- 21. The drape according to claim 20, wherein the cell depth is from about 8 mils to about 16 mils.
- 22. The drape according to claim 20, wherein the cell depth is about 14 mils.
- 23. The drape according to claim 6, further comprising multiple zones of varying texture.
- 24. The drape according to claim 6, wherein said drape is sterilizable.
- 25. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the cells are configured into geometric groups.
- 26. The drape according to claim 25, wherein the geometric groups are radiused cells.
- 27. The drape according to claim 25, wherein the geometric groups are non-radiused cells.
- 28. The drape according to claim 25, wherein the geometric groups are repeating groups.
- 29. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the predetermined pattern of cells comprises cells of a depth and volume to provide a desired degree of fluid capture and retention.
- 30. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the drape is a component of a sterile package.
- 31. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the second film comprises from about 225 to about 325 cells/in2.
- 32. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the second film comprises about 310 cells/in2.
- 33. The drape according to claim 6, wherein the second film retains an amount of fluid equal to from about 0.05 gin2 to about 0.31 gin2.
- 34. A medical drape comprising the film of claim 2.
- 35. A sterilizable medical drape comprising:a first polymeric sheet having a first dimension; a second polymeric sheet adhered to the first sheet and having a smaller dimension that the first dimension; wherein said second sheet has a predetermined texture comprising fluid retaining cells, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, pressure forming and molding.
- 36. A method for retaining fluid on a medical drape comprising the steps of:providing a polymeric film having at least one layer having a textured surface area having a predetermined pattern of fluid retaining cells, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, pressure forming and molding; providing a fluid to the textured surface area; and retaining the fluid in the cells.
- 37. The method according to claim 36, further comprising the step of:treating the textured area to enhance hydrophilicity of the film.
- 38. A method of making a fluid retaining medical drape comprising the steps of:providing a first polymeric sheet; providing a second polymeric sheet having a textured area with a predetermined pattern of fluid retaining cells, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, presseure forming and molding; treating the second sheet with an additive to make the textured area hydrophilic; and adhering the sheets together.
- 39. A method of making a fluid retaining medical drape comprising the steps of:extruding a polymeric film having a first and second textured surface, said textured surface comprising a predetermined pattern of fluid retaining cells, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, pressure forming and molding; and treating the first surface to create fluid retaining cells in the film.
- 40. The method according to claim 39, further comprising the step of treating the first surface with a surfactant.
- 41. A method of making a fluid retaining medical drape comprising the steps of:extruding a first polymeric film; coextruding a second polymeric film having fluid retaining cells, said cells retaining a predetermined volume, with said cells formed in the film by forming methods selected from the group consisting of embossing, thermoforming, pressure forming and molding; and adhering the second film to the first film.
- 42. The method according to claim 41, further comprising the step of treating the second polymeric film with a surfactant.
