- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the guide sheath is slidably attached to the handle.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the deflection means comprises an attachment point allowing for the deflection of the deflectable distal end along at least one plane.
- 5. The device of claim 4, wherein the attachment point comprises one or more nodes on the distal end of the elongated sheath and one or more matching recesses on the proximal end of the deflectable distal end which are configured to accept the one or more nodes.
- 6. The device of claim 4, wherein the attachment point comprises one or more pins, the one or more pins defining a fulcrum about which the deflectable distal end rotates.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein the deflection means comprises one or more components, alone or in combination, selected from the group consisting of pull wires, springs of various shapes and configurations, sliders, switches, or motors.
- 8. The device of claim 1, wherein the deflectable distal end further comprises a translatable sharp tip and the device further comprising an activation means for slidably translating the retractable sharp tip within at least the deflectable distal end.
- 9. The device of claim 8, wherein the activation means is part of the deflection means, the operation of the deflection means and the activation means being performed in one controlled movement by a surgeon performing the surgical procedure.
- 10. The device of claim 9, wherein the deflection means is at least partially located within the handle.
- 11. The device of claim 1 wherein the deflection means deflects the deflectable distal end from about 0° to about 180°.
- 12. The device of claim 1 wherein the opening is a recess.
- 13. The device of claim 1 wherein the medical instrument is an ablation system.
- 14. A device to position a medical instrument during a surgical procedure, comprising:
a handle; a guide sheath operably attached to the handle and having a deflectable distal end comprising a translatable sharp tip; an activation means for slidably controlling the translatable sharp tip; and a deflection means for deflecting the distal end of the guide sheath, wherein tissue is dissected by the translatable sharp tip creating an opening through which at least a portion of the medical instrument can be advanced and positioned adjacent a target tissue site.
- 15. A device to position a medical instrument during a surgical procedure, comprising:
a handle; a guide sheath operably attached to the handle and having a deflectable distal end comprising a grasping means for grasping a distal end of the medical instrument; and a deflection means for deflecting the distal end of the guide sheath.
- 16. The device of claim 15, wherein the grasping means is a hook configured to grasp the medical device.
- 17. The device of claim 15, wherein the grasping means is a pair of pivoted jaws operably attached to the deflectable distal end and configured to grasp the medical device.
- 18. The device of claim 15, wherein the medical instrument is an ablation system.
- 19. A method of positioning a medical instrument within a patient's body during a surgical procedure, comprising the steps of:
providing a positioning tool having a guide sheath, the guide sheath comprising a deflectable distal end having at least one lumen passing therethrough; introducing the guide sheath into the patient's body; deflecting the deflectable distal end of the sheath; introducing the medical instrument into the patient's body; and advancing the distal end of the medical instrument through the at least one lumen of the deflectable distal end, wherein at least a portion of the medical instrument is deflected and positioned adjacent to a target tissue site.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the step of deflecting comprises deflecting the deflectable distal end a predetermined angular amount.
- 21. The method of claim 20 wherein the predetermined angular amount is a value from about 0° to about 180°.
- 22. The method of claim 19 wherein the deflectable distal end of the sheath further comprises a sharp tip and the method further comprises the step of dissecting tissue with the sharp tip.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein the step of dissecting tissue comprises the step of advancing the sharp tip until a distal end of the sharp tip is advanced past the deflectable distal end.
- 24. The method of claim 19 wherein the medical instrument is an ablation system.
- 25. A method of positioning a medical instrument within a patient's body during a surgical procedure, comprising the steps of:
providing a positioning tool comprising a guide sheath having a deflectable distal end configured to slideably receive at least a portion of the medical instrument; introducing the guide sheath into the patient's body; advancing the medical instrument slideably received by the deflectable distal end, whereby at least a portion of the medical instrument is positioned adjacent to a target tissue site.
- 26. The method of claim 25 comprising the step of deflecting the distal end of the guide sheath,
whereby at least a portion of the medical instrument is deflected.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the medical instrument is an ablation system.
- 28. A method of positioning a medical instrument within a patient's body during a surgical procedure, comprising the steps of:
providing a positioning tool comprising a guide sheath having a deflectable distal end, the deflectable distal end comprising a grasping means for grasping the medical instrument; introducing the guide sheath into the patient's body along a first path; deflecting the deflectable distal end of the sheath; introducing the medical instrument into the patient's body along a second path; grasping the medical instrument with the grasping means; retracting the guide sheath along the first path, wherein at least a portion of the medical instrument is operably placed adjacent a target tissue site.
