Claims
- 1. A medical retrieval device, comprising:
a basket including one or more legs forming the basket, at least one of the legs comprising at least two surfaces wherein at least one of the two surfaces comprises a curved surface.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein the leg comprising the at least two surfaces has a cross section defined by the surfaces.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein the cross section comprises a D-shape defined by the surfaces wherein the curved surface comprises an outer surface and the other surface comprises an inner surface.
- 4. The device of claim 2 wherein the curved surface comprises an outer surface and the at least one other surface comprises an inner surface.
- 5. The device of claim 4 wherein the inner surface comprises a flat surface such that the cross section comprises a D-shape.
- 6. The device of claim 4 wherein the inner surface comprises at least one point.
- 7. The device of claim 4 wherein the inner surface comprises a surface that is rougher than the outer surface.
- 8. The device of claim 4 wherein the inner surface is rough.
- 9. The device of claim 8 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a serrated surface.
- 10. The device of claim 8 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a toothed surface.
- 11. The device of claim 8 wherein the rough inner surface comprises an etched surface.
- 12. The device of claim 2 wherein the curved surface comprises more than one radius.
- 13. The device of claim 1 wherein the basket includes at least three legs.
- 14. The device of claim 4 wherein the inner surface comprises a concave surface such that the cross section comprises a crescent shape.
- 15. A medical retrieval device, comprising:
a basket including one or more legs forming the basket, at least one of the legs comprising at least an inner surface and an outer surface wherein the outer surface comprises an atraumatic surface.
- 16. The device of claim 15 wherein the outer atraumatic surface comprises a curved surface.
- 17. The device of claim 16 wherein the inner surface comprises a flat surface such that the leg has a D-shaped cross section defined by the flat and curved surfaces.
- 18. The device of claim 15 wherein the inner surface comprises a surface that is rougher than the outer atraumatic surface.
- 19. The device of claim 15 wherein the inner surface is rough.
- 20. The device of claim 19 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a serrated surface.
- 21. The device of claim 19 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a toothed surface.
- 22. The device of claim 19 wherein the rough inner surface comprises an etched surface.
- 23. The device of claim 16 wherein the curved surface comprises more than one radius.
- 24. The device of claim 15 wherein the basket includes at least three legs.
- 25. A method for retrieving material from a body, comprising:
inserting an extractor into a body, the extractor comprising a basket having one or more legs forming the basket wherein at least one of the legs comprises at least an inner surface and an outer surface wherein the outer surface comprises an atraumatic surface; capturing the material with the basket such that the captured material contacts the inner surface of at least one of the legs; and withdrawing the extractor from the body to remove the captured material from the body.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein the step of capturing the material comprises capturing a calculus.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the step of capturing the calculus comprises capturing a kidney stone.
- 28. The method of claim 26 wherein the step of capturing the calculus comprises capturing a ureteral stone.
- 29. The method of claim 26 wherein the step of capturing the calculus comprises capturing a bladder stone.
- 30. The method of claim 26 wherein the step of capturing the calculus comprises capturing a stone in the biliary tree.
- 31. The method of claim 25 wherein the capturing step further comprises breaking the material into two or more pieces with the basket.
- 32. A medical retrieval device, comprising:
a basket including one or more legs forming the basket, at least one of the legs comprising at least an inner surface having at least a portion adapted to contact material, the portion of the inner surface being a rough surface.
- 33. The device of claim 32 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a serrated surface.
- 34. The device of claim 32 wherein the rough inner surface comprises a toothed surface.
- 35. The device of claim 32 wherein the rough inner surface comprises an etched surface.
