Claims
- 1. An apparatus for coupling to a medical sensor having a transducer, comprising:
- an encoder for encoding a characteristic of said sensor as a modulated signal;
- a transmitter for transmitting said modulated signal to a remote analyzer;
- wherein said sensor is compatible with devices providing a current signal to read a resistance value in a sensor, said apparatus providing compatibility by said encoder causing said modulated signal to have an average voltage corresponding to a known resistance value in response to a current received from an oximeter.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein sensor and apparatus are coupled together in one housing, said transducer is a LED and said characteristic is a wavelength of light emitted by said LED.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said transducer is at least one LED, and said modulated signal produces a digital code indicating a number of LEDs present.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said transducer is at least one LED, and said modulated signal produces a digital code indicating an identity of a sensor manufacturer.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said modulated signal is a pulse width modulated signal.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 further comprising means for switching an output of said apparatus between first and second resistances to generate said pulse width modulated signal.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising means for placing a pulse of said pulse width modulated signal in a time slot to indicate a second characteristic of said sensor.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said pulse width is modulated by controlling a number of equal size pulses in a time period.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said second characteristic is a series of coefficients for use in analyzing a signal from said sensor.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said modulated signal is a frequency modulated signal.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said transmitter is a cable.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said encoder includes a memory for storing an indication of a characteristic of said transducer.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said memory stores multiple digital bits.
- 14. A method for using a medical sensor having a transducer, comprising the steps of:
- encoding a characteristic of said sensor as a modulated signal;
- transmitting said modulated signal to a remote analyzer; and
- wherein said sensor is compatible with devices providing a current signal to read a resistance value in a sensor, said apparatus providing compatibility by said encoder causing said modulated signal to have an average voltage corresponding to a known resistance value in response to a current received from an oximeter.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said modulated signal is a pulse width modulated signal.
- 16. The method of claim 14, further comprising placing a pulse of said pulse width modulated signal in a time slot to indicate a second characteristic of said sensor.
- 17. The method of claim 14, wherein said pulse width is modulated by controlling a number of equal size pulses in a time period.
- 18. The method of claim 14, wherein said modulated signal is a frequency modulated signal.
- 19. The method of claim 14, wherein said encoding step includes storing in a memory an indication of a characteristic of said transducer.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein multiple digital bits are stored in said memory.
- 21. A pulse oximeter sensor comprising:
- a first light emitting means for emitting light of a first known wavelength;
- means for sensing the light emitted by said first light emitting means;
- transmitting means for coupling said sensor to a remote monitor;
- means, coupled to said transmitting means, for encoding said first known wavelength as a modulated signal having first and second modulated values, said first modulated value having one of a first plurality of values recognizable by a first type of pulse oximeter, said second modulated value not affecting the recognition of said first modulated value by said first type of pulse oximeter, said second modulated value being recognizable by a second type of pulse oximeter.
- 22. The pulse oximeter sensor of claim 21, wherein said first modulated value is a pulse width modulated value and said second modulated value is a placement of at least one pulse of said pulse width modulated signal in a time slot, wherein the choice of the time slot conveys a value.
- 23. The pulse oximeter of claim 21, wherein said first modulated value conveys a choice of a first set of coefficients corresponding to said first light emitting means for use in analyzing a signal from said means for sensing, and said second modulated value conveys a modification to said first set of coefficients.
- 24. The pulse oximeter of claim 21, further comprising:
- means for determining a standard resistance value in said remote monitor used to measure an input from said sensor; and
- means for varying said modulated value in accordance with a determined standard resistance value.
