Claims
- 1. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient, said suction canister including an indicator portion; and
- a station for draining and cleaning said suction canister, said station removably supporting said suction canister and including a probe insertable into said suction canister to alter said indicator portion so as to provide a visual indication, after said suction canister is no longer supported by said station, that said suction canister has been drained and cleaned.
- 2. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said probe supplies a cleaning fluid to said suction canister.
- 3. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said probe drains the fluid contained in said suction canister.
- 4. The system as set forth in claim 1 and further comprising interengaging means on said station and on said suction canister for orienting said suction canister relative to said station.
- 5. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient; and
- a station for draining the fluid contained in said suction canister, said station removably supporting said suction canister and including a probe insertable into said suction canister to structurally alter said suction canister to enable fluid to be drained from said suction canister.
- 6. The medical system as set forth in claim 5 wherein said probe drains the fluid contained in said suction canister.
- 7. The medical system as set forth in claim 5 wherein said station cleans said suction canister.
- 8. The medical system as set forth in claim 7 wherein said probe supplies a cleaning fluid to said suction canister.
- 9. The medical system as set forth in claim 5 and further including an indicator device on said suction canister for providing a visual indication that said suction canister has been drained.
- 10. The medical system of claim 5 wherein the structural alteration includes movement of one portion of said suction canister relative to a second portion of said suction canister.
- 11. The medical system of claim 10 wherein said movement of one portion of said suction canister relative to a second portion of said suction canister includes the punching out of a portion of said suction canister.
- 12. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient, said suction canister having an interior; and
- a station for removably supporting said suction canister and for draining the fluid contained in said suction canister, said station structurally altering said suction canister to enable fluid to be drained from said interior of said suction canister.
- 13. The medical system as set forth in claim 12 wherein said station includes a probe insertable into said suction canister to structurally alter said suction canister.
- 14. The medical system of claim 12 wherein the structural alteration includes movement of one portion of said suction canister relative to a second portion of said suction canister.
- 15. The medical system of claim 14 wherein said movement of one portion of said suction canister relative to a second portion of said suction canister includes the punching out of a portion of said suction canister.
- 16. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient; and
- a station for removably supporting said suction canister and for draining the fluid contained in said suction canister, said station including a probe insertable into said suction canister,
- wherein said suction canister includes an indicator visible in response to draining of said suction canister, and wherein said indicator is visible in response to said probe being inserted into said suction canister.
- 17. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient; and
- a station for removably supporting said suction canister and for draining the fluid contained in said suction canister, said station including a probe insertable into said suction canister,
- wherein said suction canister includes an indicator visible in response to draining of said suction canister, and wherein said indicator includes a portion of said suction canister that is punched out when said probe is inserted into said suction canister.
- 18. A medical system comprising:
- a suction canister for containing fluid drained from a patient; and
- a station for removably supporting said suction canister and for draining the fluid contained in said suction canister,
- wherein said suction canister includes an indicator visible in response to draining of said suction canister and wherein said station cleans said suction canister after said suction canister has been drained.
- 19. The system as set forth in claim 18 wherein said station includes a probe insertable into said suction canister to supply cleaning fluid to said suction canister.
- 20. A method for handling medical waste, comprising the steps:
- (a) collecting fluid from a patient in a suction canister having an interior;
- (b) providing a station for draining said suction canister, said station including a probe insertable into said suction canister;
- (c) placing said suction canister in communication with said station;
- (d) activating said station so that said probe is inserted into said suction canister to enable the fluid to be drained from the interior of said suction canister;
- (e) providing a visual indication that said suction canister has been drained, wherein said visual indication includes a portion of said suction canister that is punched out by said probe.
- 21. A method for handling medical waste comprising the steps:
- attaching a conduit to a port wall of a suction canister;
- collecting fluid from a patient in the suction canister wherein the fluid flows from the patient through the conduit to the suction canister;
- providing a station for removably supporting the suction canister and for draining the suction canister, the station including a probe insertable into the suction canister;
- removing the conduit from the port wall and placing the suction canister in communication with the station; and
- inserting the probe into the suction canister, with the port wall in place on the suction canister, to enable fluid to be drained from the suction canister.
- 22. The method as set forth in claim 21 and further including the step of providing a visual indication that said suction canister had been drained.
