Claims
- 1. A medicament container for holding medicament to be inhaled by a patient, the medicament container comprising:
an upper layer formed from a flexible piece of material which is readily pierced by a lancet; and a substantially rigid lower layer disposed below the upper layer, the lower layer having at least one receptacle formed therein for receiving medicament.
- 2. The Medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the receptacle has a generally rectangular opening closed by the upper layer.
- 3. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the at least one receptacle comprises a plurality of receptacles formed in the lower layer.
- 4. The medicament container according to claim 3, wherein the lower layer forms a disk with a plurality of receptacles formed therein.
- 5. The medicament container according to claim 4, wherein the lower layer forms a generally rectangular piece of plastic with a plurality of receptacles formed in a linear array.
- 6. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the receptacle has a generally triangular cross-section, and wherein the lower layer is sufficiently rigid to maintain the generally triangular cross-section of the receptacle during use.
- 7. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the receptacle has a generally trapezoidal cross-section, and wherein the lower layer is sufficiently rigid to maintain the generally trapezoidal cross-section of the receptacle during use.
- 8. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the receptacle has a generally semi-circular cross-section, and wherein the lower layer is sufficiently rigid to maintain the generally semi-circular cross-section of the receptacle during use.
- 9. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the medicament container further comprises a middle layer disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer.
- 10. The medicament container according to claim 9, wherein the middle layer is generally rigid.
- 11. The medicament container according to claim 9, wherein the medicament container further comprises a medicament carrying tray disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer.
- 12. The medicament container according to claim 11, wherein the medicament carrying tray is disposed between the middle layer and the lower layer.
- 13. The medicament container according to claim 11, wherein the upper layer, the middle layer and the medicament carrying tray are attached to one another.
- 14. The medicament container according to claim 9, wherein the medicament carrying tray comprises a plurality of receptacles formed therein for receiving medicament.
- 15. The medicament container according to claim 9, wherein the middle layer comprises a projection disposed between the upper layer and the receptacle formed in the lower layer.
- 16. The medicament container according to claim 15, wherein the projection extends downwardly into the receptacle.
- 17. The medicament container according to claim 16, wherein the projection has a lower surface, and the lower layer has all upper surface defining the receptacle, and wherein the lower surface of the projection and the upper surface of the lower layer are generally parallel.
- 18. The medicament container according to claim 15, wherein a medicament containment area/flow channel is formed in the medicament container between lower layer and the projection.
- 19. The medicament container according to claim 18, wherein the medicament containment area/flow channel is generally elbow-shaped.
- 20. The medicament container according to claim 15, wherein the middle layer has a first opening and a second opening spaced apart from one another, the first opening and the second opening being disposed between the upper layer and the receptacle of the lower layer.
- 21. The medicament container according to claim 20, wherein at least one of the first and second openings is defined by an angled sidewall.
- 22. The medicament container according to claim 20, wherein each of the first opening and the second opening are defined by an angled sidewall and wherein the angled sidewalls of the first opening and the second opening are disposed opposite one another.
- 23. The medicament container according to claim 1, wherein the medicament container further comprises a medicament carrying tray disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer.
- 24. The medicament container according to claim 23, wherein the medicament carrying tray comprises a plurality of receptacles configured for nesting in the receptacles of the lower layer.
- 25. The medicament container according to claim 23, wherein the upper layer is attached to the medicament carrying tray and wherein the upper layer and medicament carrying tray are removable from the lower layer.
- 26. A medicament container for holding and dispensing medicament, the container comprising:
a lower layer having a receptacle formed therein for holding medicament; and a projection disposed so as to extend into the receptacle.
- 27. The medicament container according to claim 26, wherein the medicament container comprises an upper layer covering the receptacle, the upper layer being formed from a puncturable or shearable material.
- 28. The medicament container according to claim 26, wherein the medicament container further comprises a first opening and a second opening, the first and second openings being disposed on opposing sides of the projection.
- 29. The medicament container according to claim 28, wherein the medicament container comprises a middle layer disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the middle layer forming the projection and having the first and second openings formed therein.
- 30. The medicament container according to claim 28, wherein at least one of the first and second openings is defined, in part, by an angled wall.
- 31. The medicament container according to claim 30, wherein the first and second opening are defined, in part, by angled walls, and wherein the angled walls are disposed opposite one another.
- 32. The medicament container according to claim 26, wherein the lower layer is formed by a generally rigid wall, and has a cross-sectional shape selected from the group consisting of triangular, trapezoidal, semi-circular and semi-elliptical.
- 33. The medicament container according to claim 26, wherein the projection and the lower layer form a medicament containment area/flow channel which is generally elbow shaped.
- 34. The medicament container according to claim 26, wherein the medicament container further comprises a medicament carrying tray disposed between the lower layer and the projection.
- 35. The medicament container according to claim 34, wherein the lower layer has a plurality of receptacles and wherein the medicament carrying tray comprises a plurality of receptacles configured for nesting in the lower layer.
- 36. The medicament container according to claim 34, wherein the medicament container comprises a plurality of projections which extend into the receptacles in the medicament carrying tray.
- 37. The medicament container according to claim 34, wherein the medicament container further comprises an upper layer attached to the medicament carrying tray.
- 38. The medicament container according to claim 37, wherein the medicament carrying tray and the upper layer are removable from the lower layer.
- 39. A method for dispensing medicament from a medicament container, the method comprising:
selecting a medicament container having an upper layer and a lower layer and medicament disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer; puncturing/shearing the upper layer of the medicament container so as to form a first opening and a second opening adjacent lateral extremes of the upper layer; and passing air into the first opening and out of the second opening to entrain medicament disposed in the medicament container.
- 40. The method according to claim 39, wherein the upper layer is formed of foil and the method further comprises pressing the foil against a portion of the lower layer to minimize interference with entrainment of medicament contained in the medicament container.
- 41. The method according to claim 40, wherein the method further comprises puncturing the upper layer of the medicament container with a lancet having tapered ends.
- 42. The method according to claim 41, wherein the method further comprises pressing the punctured portions of the upper layer against the lower layer to either side of the medicament to thereby minimize interference with the airflow through the medicament container.
- 43. The method according to claim 41, wherein the method further comprises selecting a medicament container having a medicament carrying tray nested in the lower layer, the upper layer being attached to the medicament carrying tray, and pressing the punctured portions of the upper layer against the medicament carrying tray to either side of the medicament to thereby minimize interference with the airflow through the medicament container.
- 44. The method according to claim 43, wherein the upper layer and the medicament carrying tray are removable from the lower layer.
- 45. The method according to claim 39, wherein the method comprises selecting a medicament container having a projection extending downward from a position adjacent the upper layer toward the lower layer.
- 46. The method according to claim 45, wherein the method comprises selecting a medicament container wherein the projection is defined by walls which extend generally parallel with the lower layer.
- 47. The method according to claim 45, wherein the projection has a cross-sectional shape selected from the group consisting of triangular, trapezoidal, semi-circular and semi-elliptical.
- 48. The method according to claim 45, wherein the method comprises forming the first opening on one side of the projection and forming the second opening on an opposing side of the projection.
- 49. The method according to claim 44, wherein the method comprises selecting a medicament container having a middle layer disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the projection being a portion of the middle layer.
- 50. The method according to claim 49, wherein the method further comprises selecting a medicament container having a middle layer having a first opening and a second opening, each of the first and second openings having at least one angled wall defining the openings.
- 51. The method according to claim 49, wherein the method further comprises selecting a medicament container having the angled walls defining the first and second openings disposed opposite each other and pressing a portion of the upper layer against the angled wall as a lancet is forced through the upper layer to form first and second openings in the upper layer.
- 52. The method according to claim 49, wherein the method further comprises disposing a medicament carrying tray between the upper layer and the lower layer, the upper layer being attached to the medicament carrying tray and disposing medicament in the medicament carrying tray.
- 53. The method according to claim 52, wherein the method further comprises disposing a projection to extend into the medicament carrying tray.
- 54. A system for dispensing medicament, the system comprising:
a housing comprising:
in upper portion having an airflow channel extending therethrough; a lower portion configured for receiving a medicament container having an upper layer, a lower layer and medicament disposed therein; and a lancet disposed in the housing for selectively puncturing or shearing the upper layer of the medicament container so as to form a first opening and a second opening in the upper layer of the medicament container in alignment with the airflow channel.
- 55. The system according to claim 54, wherein the lancet comprises angled ends configured for forcing the punctured or sheared upper layer against the lower layer to minimize interference with medicament entrainment.
- 56. The system according to claim 54, wherein the lancet comprises ends for forming a portion of the airflow channel through the housing.
- 57. The system according to claim 54, wherein the housing further comprises an airflow control valve disposed along the airflow channel for selectively limiting airflow through the airflow channel.
- 58. The system according to claim 57, wherein the housing further comprises an initial airflow channel having an airflow vane disposed therein.
- 59. The system according to claim 58, wherein the airflow vane is disposed in communication with the airflow control valve for selectively opening the airflow control valve.
- 60. The system according to claim 57, wherein the housing further comprises a deagglomeration channel disposed proximally from the airflow control valve.
- 61. The system according to claim 54, wherein the airflow channel extends in the first opening in the upper layer and out the second opening in the upper layer of the medicament channel.
- 62. The system according to claim 54, wherein the housing further comprises a sealing member configured for engaging the medicament container when the medicament container is disposed below the lancet.
- 63. The system according to claim 62, wherein the sealing member comprises a first opening and a second opening spaced apart from the first opening.
- 64. The system according to claim 54, wherein at least one of the first opening and the second opening of the sealing member is formed with an angled sidewall.
- 65. The system according to claim 64, wherein the first opening and the second opening of the sealing member are each defined, in part, by an angled sidewall, and wherein the angled sidewall of the first opening is set opposite the angled sidewall of the second opening.
- 66. The system according to claim 54, wherein the system further comprises a medicament container disposed in the housing, the medicament container having an upper layer and a lower layer forming a receptacle below the upper layer, and a projection extending into the receptacle.
- 67. The system according to claim 66, further comprising a medicament carrying tray disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the upper layer being attached to the medicament carrying tray.
- 68. The system according to claim 66, wherein the medicament container comprises a middle layer disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the middle layer forming the projection, and having a first opening and a second opening on opposing sides of the projection.
- 69. The system according to claim 66, wherein at least one of the first opening and second opening of the middle layer is defined, in part, by an angled sidewall.
- 70. The system according to claim 69, wherein the first opening and the second opening of the middle layer are formed, in part, with an angled sidewall, and wherein the angled sidewall of the first opening and the angled sidewall of the second opening are disposed opposite one another.
- 71. The system according to claim 54, further comprising a medicament carrying tray disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the medicament carrying tray being attached to the upper layer and removable from the lower layer.
- 72. A method for improving dispensing of medicament, the method comprising:
selecting a housing having all air flow channel extending therethrough from a distal end to a proximal end through which the user inhales; selecting a medicament container having an upper layer and a lower layer and medicament contained between the upper layer and the lower layer; positioning the medicament container in housing in fluid communication with the airflow channel; actuating a lancet mechanism in the housing to form a first opening and a second opening in the upper layer of the medicament container; and inhaling through the airflows channel to entrain medicament in the medicament container and to deposit said medicament into the lungs of the user.
- 73. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method comprises actuating the lancet mechanism to puncture or shear a portion of the upper layer and to press the portion against the lower layer of the medicament container to minimize interference with medicament entrainment.
- 74. The method according to claim 73, wherein the method comprises selecting a housing having a lancet mechanism with tapered ends for puncturing or shearing the upper layer.
- 75. The method according to claim 74, wherein the method comprises selecting a housing having a lancet mechanism disposed so that the tapered ends form a portion of the airflow channel through the housing.
- 76. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method comprises disposing a medicament carrying tray in the lower layer, the medicament carrying tray being attached to the upper layer, and a actuating the lancet mechanism to puncture or shear a portion of the upper layer and to press the portion against the medicament carrying tray of the medicament container to minimize interference with medicament entrainment.
- 77. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method comprises disposing a medicament container having a projection disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer to form an elbow-shaped medicament containment area/flow channel within the medicament container.
- 78. The method according to claim 77, wherein the method comprises forming a first opening and a second opening in the upper layer of the medicament container on opposing sides of the projection.
- 79. The method according to claim 78, wherein the method comprises inhaling to draw air through the airflow channel to cause air to flow into the first opening, through the elbow-shaped channel, and out the second opening.
- 80. The method according to claim 79, wherein the method further comprises selectively restricting airflow through the airflow channel as the user inhales.
- 81. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method comprising selecting a medicament container wherein the upper layer is flexible and the lower layer is generally rigid.
- 82. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method further comprises disposing a sealing member above the medicament container.
- 83. The method according to claim 82, wherein the method comprises advancing the lancet through the sealing member and into the medicament container.
- 84. The method according to claim 833, wherein the method comprises positioning the sealing member such that air flow drawn through the airflow channel passes through the sealing member as it enters and exits the medicament container.
- 85. The method according to claim 72, wherein the method further comprises selecting a medicament container including a medicament carrying tray disposed between the upper layer and the lower layer, the medicament carrying tray holding the medicament.
- 86. The method according claim 85, wherein the method comprises selecting a medicament carrying tray which is attached to the upper layer, and removable from the lower layer.
- 87. The method according to claim 86, wherein the method comprises inserting the medicament carrying tray, the upper layer and the medicament held between the upper layer and the medicament carrying tray into the lower layer.
- 88. A medicament container for holding medicament to be inhaled by a patient, the medicament container comprising:
an upper layer formed from a flexible piece of material which is readily pierced by a lancet; and a semi-rigid medicament carrying tray attached to the upper layer, the medicament carrying tray having a plurality of receptacles formed therein, at least one of the receptacles having a powdered medicament contained therein.
- 89. The medicament container for holding, medicament according to claim 88, wherein the receptacles have a generally triangular cross-section and a generally rectangular opening.
- 90. The medicament container for holding medicament according to claim 89, wherein the medicament carrying tray is formed of the group consisting of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinyl dichloride, fluoronated homopolymers, fluoronated coplymers, chloronated homopolymers and chloronated copolymers.
- 91. The medicament container for holding medicament according to claim 89, wherein the medicament carrying tray comprises a disk having an opening formed through the center thereof.
- 92. A method for dispensing medicament from a medicament container, the method comprising:
selecting a medicament container having an upper layer, medicament carrying tray and medicament disposed between the upper layer and the medicament carrying tray; puncturing/shearing the upper layer of the medicament container so as to form a first opening and a second opening adjacent lateral extremes of the upper layer; and passing air into the first opening and out of the second opening to entrain medicament disposed in the medicament container.
- 93. The method according to claim 92, wherein the upper layer is formed of foil and the method further comprises pressing the foil against a portion of the medicament carrying tray to minimize interference with entrainment of medicament contained the medicament container.
- 94. The method according to claim 92 further comprising disposing the upper layer, medicament carrying tray and medicament in a rigid lower layer configured for receiving the medicament carrying tray.
- 95. The method according to claim 94, further comprising removing the upper layer and medicament carrying tray once medicament in the medicament carrying tray has been exhausted.
