Claims
- 1. A device for the administration to the lung by inhalation of a medicament in powdered form, comprising a mouthpiece, a medicament reservoir communicating with said mouthpiece, and metering means for dispensing a dose of medicament from the reservoir, wherein said reservoir contains a compacted body of powdered medicament including an active ingredient having a particle size of from 1 to 10 .mu.m when in loose powder form, and said metering means includes a rotatable helical blade for abrading the compacted body.
- 2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the compacted body is urged towards the means for abrading by biasing means.
- 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein the compacted body of powdered medicament is loosely compacted.
- 4. A device according to claim 1, wherein the compacted body of powdered medicament is tightly compacted.
- 5. A device according to claim 1 wherein said medicament contains an active ingredient which is hygroscopic.
- 6. A device according to claim 1 wherein said medicament contains an active ingredient which is selected from the group consisting of sodium cromoglycate and nedocromil sodium.
- 7. A device according to claim 1 wherein the medicament includes an inert carrier.
- 8. A device in accordance with claim 1 comprising a through-going pathway communicating with said mouthpiece including a cylindrical chamber within which entrained medicament may circulate and an inlet passageway leading to said chamber, wherein said inlet passageway is tangential to a wall of said chamber and orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of said chamber, and an outlet from the chamber is situated on a longitudinal axis of the chamber so that entrained medicament is removed through said outlet from a central zone of the chamber, said inlet passageway including a venturi adjacent to the junction of said inlet passageway with said chamber.
- 9. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said metering means includes means for controlling the rotation of said helical blade.
- 10. A device in accordance with claim 9 further including biasing means for urging said compacted body toward said helical blade.
- 11. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said compacted body is annular and surrounds an axis around which said helical blade can be rotated.
