Claims
- 1. A medicinal aerosol composition comprising:
a propellant; an excipient comprising a compound of the structure R1—(O—CH2—CH2)n—X; wherein
X is selected from the group consisting of: —C(O)OH; —S(O2)OH; —OS(O2)OH; —P(OH)2O; —OP(OH)2O; —N(R2)(R2); —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z; —OC(O)—R2—C(O)—Z; —O—R3—C(O)—Z; and —OC(O)CH(R3)—N(R2)(R2); Z is selected from —OH; —N(R2)(R2); —NH—R2—NH—; an amino acid residue; a peptide residue with from 2 to 8 amino acids; or a hydroxy acid; n is from 1 to 250; R1 is methyl or ethyl; Each R2 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons; and R3 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons, wherein R2 and R3 may optionally be connected together to form an alkylene bridge of from 2 to 4 carbons; and a drug.
- 2. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 1 wherein X is —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z.
- 3. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 2 wherein Z is —OH.
- 4. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 2 wherein Z is an amino acid residue selected from the group consisting of glycine, glycineamide, alanine, proline, taurine, and sarcosine.
- 5. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 1 wherein n is from 2 to 45.
- 6. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 1 wherein the propellant comprises a hydrofluorocarbon.
- 7. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 6 wherein the hydrofluorocarbon is selected from the group consisting of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane, and a mixture thereof.
- 8. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 6 wherein the drug, excipient, and propellant form a solution.
- 9. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 6 wherein the composition comprises a suspension in the propellant.
- 10. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 6 further comprising a polar cosolvent.
- 11. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 10 wherein the polar cosolvent is selected from the group consisting of ethanol, isopropanol, and mixtures thereof
- 12. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of excipient to drug is between about 5:1 and 1:5.
- 13. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of excipient to drug is about 1:1.
- 14. A particulate medicinal composition comprising:
particles incorporating a drug and an excipient comprising a compound of the structure R1—(O—CH2—CH2)n—X; wherein
X is selected from the group consisting of: —C(O)OH; —S(O2)OH; —OS(O2)OH; —P(OH)2O; —OP(OH)2O; —N(R2)(R2); —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z; —OC(O)—R2—C(O)—Z; —O—R3—C(O)—Z; and —OC(O)CH(R3)—N(R2)(R2); Z is selected from —OH; —N(R2)(R2); —NH—R2—NH—; an amino acid residue; a peptide residue with from 2 to 8 amino acids; or a hydroxy acid; n is from 1 to 250; R1 is methyl or ethyl; Each R2 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons; and R3 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons, wherein R2 and R3 may optionally be connected together to form an alkylene bridge of from 2 to 4 carbons; wherein the particles have a mass mean aerodynamic diameter of less than about 10 microns.
- 15. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein X is —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z.
- 16. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 15 wherein Z is —OH.
- 17. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 15 wherein Z is an amino acid residue selected from the group consisting of glycine, glycineamide, alanine, proline, taurine, and sarcosine.
- 18. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein n is from 2 to 45.
- 19. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the particles have a mass mean aerodynamic diameter of less than about 5 microns.
- 20. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the particles have a mean diameter of less than about 5 microns.
- 21. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the molar ratio of excipient to drug is between about 5:1 and 1:5.
- 22. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the molar ratio of excipient to drug is about 1:1.
- 23. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the drug and excipient form a hydrophilic ion pair complex.
- 24. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 14 wherein the drug and excipient form a pharmaceutical salt.
- 25. The particulate medicinal composition of claim 24 wherein the particles have a mass mean aerodynamic diameter of less than about 5 microns.
- 26. An aqueous medicinal composition comprising:
an aqueous carrier fluid; an excipient comprising a compound of the structure R1—(O—CH2—CH2)n—X; wherein
X is selected from the group consisting of: —C(O)OH; —S(O2)OH; —OS(O2)OH; —P(OH)2O; —OP(OH)2O; —N(R2)(R2); —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z; —OC(O)—R2—C(O)—Z; —O—R3—C(O)—Z; and —OC(O)CH(R3)—N(R2)(R2); Z is selected from —OH; —N(R2)(R2); —NH-R2—NH—; an amino acid residue; a peptide residue with from 2 to 8 amino acids; or a hydroxy acid; n is from 1 to 250; R1 is methyl or ethyl; Each R2 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons; and R3 is independently selected from hydrogen or linear, branched, or cyclic hydrocarbon with 1 to 6 carbons, wherein R2 and R3 may optionally be connected together to form an alkylene bridge of from 2 to 4 carbons; and a drug.
- 27. The aqueous medicinal composition of claim 26 wherein X is —OC(R2)(R2)—C(O)—Z.
- 28. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 26 wherein Z is —OH.
- 29. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 26 wherein Z is an amino acid residue selected from the group consisting of glycine, alanine, proline, taurine, and sarcosine.
- 30. The medicinal aerosol composition of claim 26 wherein n is from 2 to 45.
