Claims
- 1. - energizing the one clutch in said initial set of clutches corresponding to the slowest speed of operation of said first plurality of shafts;
- energizing the one clutch in said intermediate set of clutches corresponding to the slowest speed of operation of said second plurality of shafts such that said transmission is placed in the lowest available speed of operation;
- energizing a first clutch in said final set of clutches corresponding to the slowest speed of operation of said output shaft in the direction of movement of said vehicle;
- sensing vehicle speed; and
- modulating the pressure exerted by said first clutch of said final set of clutches to decelerate the speed of movement of said vehicle.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said modulating step is applied only to said first clutch energized in said final set of clutches.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of:
- when the speed of operation of said output shaft is reduced to a predetermined level, selectively energizing one clutch in each of said clutch sets to select the final speed and direction at which said output shaft will be driven.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said predetermined level varies according to the final speed chosen.
- 5. The method of controlling vehicle deceleration during shuttle shifting of a power shift transmission having clutches for selectively interconnecting an input drive shaft, an output drive shaft, and a plurality of gears rotatably housed in said transmission in driving relationship with said input and output drive shafts such that a selective engagement of said clutches will effect a varying of the speed of operation of said output shaft for a given speed of operation of said input shaft, said gears being arranged in preselected gear ratios from a low speed to a high speed, the method comprising:
- manipulating said clutches to place said transmission in said low speed;
- sensing vehicle speed; and
- modulating one or more of said clutches to decelerate the speed of movement of said vehicle to a desired speed of operation.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said power shift transmission is provided with an initial clutch set and a final clutch set, each said clutch set having a plurality of clutches therein cooperable with said gears to selectively vary the gear ratio between said high speed and said low speed, said manipulating step including the steps of:
- energizing the clutch in both said initial clutch set and in said final clutch set to select the gear ratio corresponding to said low speed of operation of said vehicle.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said modulating step includes:
- modulating the pressure exerted by said final clutch set to decelerate the speed of movement of said vehicle.
- 8. The method of claim 7 further comprising the step of:
- energizing a clutch in each said clutch set to select a desired gear ratio for operating the vehicle at a desired speed of operation when the speed of operation of said output shaft to reduced to a predetermined level.
- 9. A method of controlling output drive shaft deceleration during shuttle shifting of a power shift transmission having clutches for selectively interconnecting an input drive shaft, an output drive shaft, and a plurality of gears rotatably housed in said transmission in driving relationship with said input and output drive shafts such that a selective engagement of said clutches will effect a varying of the speed of operation of said output shaft of a given speed of operation of said input shaft, said gears being arranged in preselected gear ratios from a low speed to a high speed, the method comprising:
- manipulating said clutches to place said transmission in said low speed;
- sensing the speed of rotation of the output drive shaft; and,
- modulating one or more of said clutches to decelerate the speed of rotation of said output drive shaft until the sensed speed of rotation is equal to a desired speed of rotation.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said power shift transmission is provided with an initial clutch set and a final clutch set, each said clutch set having a plurality of clutches therein cooperable with said gears to selectively vary the gear ratio between said high speed and said low speed, said manipulating step including the steps of:
- energizing the clutch in both said initial clutch set and in said final clutch set to select the gear ratio corresponding to said low speed of operation of said output drive shaft.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein said modulating step includes:
- modulating the pressure exerted by said final clutch set to decelerate the speed of rotation of said output drive shaft.
- 12. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:
- energizing a clutch in each said clutch set to select a desired gear ratio for operating the output drive shaft at a desired speed of rotation when the speed of rotation of said output drive shaft is reduced to a predetermined level.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of manipulating said clutches is initiated in response to a command to shift to said desired speed.
