Claims
- 1. A melt-blowing process for producing a fiber of a syndiotactic vinyl aromatic polymer, which comprises supplying a vinyl aromatic polymer having a high degree of syndiotacticity and crystalline structure in a molten form from at least one orifice of a nozzle into a gas stream supplied to an area adjacent to the orifice which attenuates the molten polymer into fibers.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polymer is supplied at a polymer flow rate at the nozzle of from 0.1 to 10 grams per minute per orifice.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the gas stream is supplied at a gas flow rate at the nozzle of from 200 to 700 m/second.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein temperature of the polymer processed at the nozzle ranges from greater than 270.degree. to 400.degree. C.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the temperature of the gas stream ranges from 425.degree. to 500.degree. C.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 which further comprises collecting the resultant microfibers with a collecting device which is located in the path of the microfibers.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein the syndiotactic vinyl aromatic polymer is syndiotactic polystyrene having a molecular weight (Mw) of from 50,000 to 750,000 and a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of from 1.8 to 8.0.
