Claims
- 1. Melt-processible polymer composition comprising (a) a non-fluorinated melt-processible polymer and (b) a fluoropolymer, characterized in that said fluoropolymer has a long chain branching index (LCBI) of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 2. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer has a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. between 103 and 5 106 Pa's.
- 3. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer is present in an amount of less than 50% by weight based on the total weight of non-fluorinated melt-processible polymer and fluoropolymer.
- 4. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 3 wherein the amount of fluoropolymer is between 2 and 50% by weight based on the total weight of non-fluorinated melt-processible polymer and fluoropolymer.
- 5. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 3 wherein the amount of fluoropolymer is between 0.005 and 2% by weight based on the total weight of non-fluorinated melt-processible polymer and fluoropolymer.
- 6. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the LCBI is between 0.2 and 5.
- 7. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer is derived from one or more fluorinated monomers and optionally one or more non-fluorinated co-monomers.
- 8. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 7 wherein the fluoropolymer is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and vinylidene fluoride and optionally hexafluoropropylene or a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride.
- 9. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the fluoropolymer is amorphous.
- 10. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the melt-processible non-fluorinated polymer is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon polymers, polyamides, chlorinated polyethylene, polyimides, polyurethanes, polystyrenes, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyketones, polyureas, polyvinyl resins, polyacrylates and polymethylacrylates.
- 11. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said melt-processible polymer composition comprises a blend of at least two fluoropolymers that differ in their melt flow index and wherein at least one of said fluoropolymers has an LCBI of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 12. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 further comprising one or more linear fluoropolymers.
- 13. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein the composition further includes a synergist.
- 14. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer is derived from the copolymerization of one or more fluorinated monomers and one or more modifiers selected from (i) olefins having a bromine or iodine atom bonded to a carbon of the double bond of the olefin, (ii) olefins corresponding to formula (IV):
- 15. Melt-processible polymer composition according to claim 1 wherein said fluoropolymer is obtained by dehydrofluorinating a fluoropolymer capable of being dehydrofluorinated so as to form double bonds in the fluoropolymer backbone and subsequently and/or simultaneously causing reaction between at least part of the formed double bonds so as to form links between fluoropolymer chains.
- 16. Method of making a melt-processible polymer composition by blending (a) a non-fluorinated melt-processible polymer and (b) a fluoropolymer that has a long chain branching index (LCBI) of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 17. Polymer melt additive composition for use as a processing aid in the extrusion of a non-fluorinated polymer, the polymer melt additive composition comprising a fluoropolymer that has a long chain branching index (LCBI) of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's and a synergist.
- 18. Polymer melt additive composition comprising a blend of at least two fluoropolymers that differ in their melt flow index and wherein at least one of said fluoropolymers has an LCBI of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 19. Polymer melt additive composition comprising a blend of one or more linear fluoropolymers and one or more fluoropolymers having an LCBI of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 20. Polymer melt additive composition according to claim 18 wherein at least one of said fluoropolymers is a fluoropolymer comprising units derivable from vinylidene fluoride.
- 21. Polymer melt additive composition according to claim 19 wherein at least one of said fluoropolymers is a fluoropolymer comprising units derivable from vinylidene fluoride.
- 22. Polymer melt additive composition for use as a processing aid in the extrusion of a non-fluorinated polymer, the polymer melt additive composition comprising a fluoropolymer that has a long chain branching index (LCBI) of at least 0.2 and a zero shear rate viscosity at 265° C. of not more than 107 Pa's.
- 23. Polymer melt additive composition according to claim 22, wherein said fluoropolymer is multimodal.
