Claims
- 1. A filter web made from microfibers wherein the microfibers are made from a polymer consisting essentially of:
- a copolymer of ethylene, 5 to 25 weight percent of (meth)acrylic acid, and optionally up to 40 weight percent of any alkyl (meth)acrylate whose alkyl groups have from 1 to 8 carbon atoms,
- having from 5 to 70 percent of acid groups neutralized with metal ions, the copolymer having a melt index of from 5 to 1000 g/10 minutes, said microfibers produced by a meltblown process, which has not been subjected to a deliberate post-charging electretizing process.
- 2. A filter web made from microfibers wherein the microfibers are made from a polymer consisting essentially of:
- a copolymer of ethylene, 5 to 25 weight percent of (meth)acrylic acid, and optionally up to 40 weight percent of any alkyl (meth)acrylate whose alkyl groups have from 1 to 8 carbon atoms,
- having from 5 to 70 percent of acid groups neutralized with metal ions, the copolymer having a melt index of from 5 to 1000 g/10 minutes, said microfibers produced by a meltblown process, the web microfibers being in a state produced by a deliberate post-charging electretizing process carried out during fiber or web formation.
- 3. The filter web of claim 1 or 2 made from an ionomer which is a dipolymer of ethylene and from 8 to 20 weight percent (meth)acrylic acid, with from 25 to 60 percent of the carboxylic acid groups neutralized with zinc, sodium, magnesium or lithium ions, or a mixture of these ions, the dipolymer having a melt index of from 150 to 350 g/10 minutes.
- 4. The filter web of claim 3 whose component microfibers have an average fiber diameter of 0.5 to 30 microns, the web having a base weight of from 0.5 to 10 ounces per square yard.
- 5. The filter web of claim 4, whose component microfibers have an average fiber diameter of 0.5 to 10 microns, the web having a base weight of from 0.7 to 3 ounces per square yard.
- 6. A filter web made from microfibers wherein the microfibers are made from a polymer consisting essentially of:
- a copolymer of ethylene, 5 to 25 weight percent of (meth)acrylic acid, and optionally up to 40 weight percent of any alkyl (meth)acrylate whose alkyl groups have from 1 to 8 carbon atoms,
- having from 5 to 70 percent of acid groups neutralized with metal ions, the copolymer having a melt index of from 5 to 1000 g/10 minutes, said microfibers produced by a meltblown process, which has not been subjected to a deliberate electretizing process.
- 7. A filter web made from microfibers wherein the microfibers are made from a polymer consisting essentially of:
- a copolymer of ethylene, 5 to 25 weight percent of (meth)acrylic acid, and optionally up to 40 weight percent of any alkyl (meth)acrylate whose alkyl groups have from 1 to 8 carbon atoms,
- having from 5 to 70 percent of acid groups neutralized with metal ions, the copolymer having a melt index of from 5 to 1000 g/10 minutes, said microfibers produced by a meltblown process, the web microfibers being in a state produced by a deliberate electretizing process carried out during fiber or web formation.
