- 7. The method of claim 6 further including the act of saving the selected memory increment format in a selected one of at least one reassembly control block, said control block being associated with the new packet.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further including the act of writing the data in a memory increment format used to record previously received portions of a packet if the delivery mechanism contains end of the packet and beginning of a new packet.
- 9. The method of claim 8 further including the act of saving the selected memory increment format in a selected one of at least one reassembly control block, said control block being associated with the new packet.
- 10. A method of writing data in memory comprising the acts of:
providing the memory having at least two storage units with each storage unit partitioned into buffers and a memory increment being a pair of buffers with each one of the pairs being located in different ones of the two storage units; examining the configuration of data received in a cell; and writing the data in a memory increment using a different format from the format previously used to record a previously received packet if the cell only contains data for the beginning of a new packet.
- 11. The method of claim 10 further including the act of writing the data in a memory increment format used to record previously received portions of a current packet if the cell carries only continuation data for the current packet.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further including the act of writing the data in a memory increment format used to record previously received portions of a current packet if the cell carries data for the end of the current packet and data for the beginning of a new packet.
- 13. A system including:
a memory subsystem, said memory subsystem includes a first memory partitioned into at least a first buffer; a second memory partitioned into at least a second buffer; an increment of memory formed from the at least first buffer in the first memory and the at least second buffer in the second memory; and a controller responsive to configuration of data in a delivery unit to write the data into the increment of memory based upon the configuration of the data in said delivery unit.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein the first memory and the second memory includes DDR DRAMs.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein the first and second buffers are each 64 bytes.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein the at least first buffer and the at least second buffer are offset relative to each other in the first memory and the second memory.
- 17. The system of claim 16 wherein the offset is approximately the size of a buffer.
- 18. The system of claim 13 further including a pointer, positioned in one of the at least first buffer and the at least second buffer, to indicate location of a second buffer pair.
- 19. The system of claim 13 further including a computer based device operatively coupled to the memory subsystem.
- 20. The system of claim 19 wherein the computer based device includes a network processor.
- 21. The system of claim 20 further including a switch operatively coupled to the network processor and said memory subsystem.
- 22. A system including:
a first storage partitioned into N buffers, N>1; a second storage partitioned into N buffers; an increment of storage formed from a first buffer in one of the storage and a second buffer in the other storage, wherein the increment of storage may be in one of at least two formats; and a controller monitoring the arrangement of data and if the data is the beginning of a new packet store the data in a memory increment format different from the one in which a previous packet has been stored.
- 23. The system of claim 22 further including storing the data in a previously used memory increment format if the data is a continuation of data for the current packet.
- 24. The system of claims 22 or 23 further including storing the data in a previously used memory increment format if the data includes end of a packet and beginning of a new packet.
- 25. A program product including a media on which a program readable by a computer is recorded, said program includes program instructions to determine the arrangement of data in a delivery unit; and
program instructions which use the so determined arrangement to cause memory increment format to be selected and written based upon said arrangement.
- 26. A method of storing data including the acts of:
providing the memory having at least two storage units with each storage unit partitioned into buffers and a memory increment being a pair of buffers with each one of the pairs being located in different ones of the two storage units, wherein the increment of storage may be in one of at least two formats; examining the configuration of data received in a cell; and writing data in the memory based upon the configuration of data in the cell.
