Claims
- 1. A cured or polymerized polymer resulting from curing or polymerizing a composition comprising
- (A) a compound represented by the following Formula I: ##STR8## wherein A is a divalent C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbyl group, D is O or NR with the proviso that when R in NR is hydrogen then Q is hydrogen or cyanamide; Q is hydrogen, epoxy, thiirane, vinylester, cyanamide, or cyanate; n" has a value from 1.01 to about 10; X is hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy group having from one to about 10 carbon atoms, a halogen atom, a nitro group, a phenyl group, a ketone group, an ester group, a carboxyl acid group with the proviso that when X is a carboxyl group Q is hydrogen, --SO.sub.2 R, --SO.sub.2 CH.sub.2 F, --SO.sub.2 CHF.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 CF.sub.3, --S(NSO.sub.2 CF.sub.3)CF.sub.3, --CF.sub.3, --COCF.sub.3, cyano, cyanovinyl, dicyanovinyl, tricyanovinyl; with the proviso that only one X can be a group other than hydrogen; R is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 hydrocarbyl group; and Y is a rigid central linkage group selected from the group consisting of --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --C.tbd.C--, --N.dbd.N--, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.N--, --N.dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --O--CO--, --CO--O--, --NR.sup.1 --CO--, --CO--NR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.N--N.dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CO--O--N.dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.N--O--CO--, --CO--NR.sup.1 --NR.sup.1 --OC--, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --O--OC--, --CO--O--CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --O--OC--CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --CO--O--, --(CHR.sup.1).sub.n' --O--CO--CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --CO--O--(CHR.sup.1).sub.n' --, --(CHR.sup.1).sub.n' --CO--O--CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --O--CO--(CHR.sup.1).sub.n' --, --S--CO--, --CO--S--, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --CO--O--, --O--OC--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C--, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.C(--Cl)--, C(--Cl).dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.C(--C.tbd.N)--, --C(--C.tbd.N).dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --C(--C.tbd.N).dbd.N--, --N.dbd.C(--C.tbd.N)--, --CO--O--, --O--CO--C.tbd.C--, ##STR9## each A.sup.1 is independently a ##STR10## group; each R.sup.1 is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group having from one to about 3 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is hydrogen or a methyl group; n has a value of zero or one; and n' has a value of 1 or 2; and
- (B) a curing amount of a curing agent or a catalyst amount of a polymerization catalyst and/or a cure accelerating amount of an accelerating agent.
- 2. The cured or polymerized polymer of claim 1 wherein in component (A), one X of the (X).sub.5 substituents is an electron withdrawing group and is para to Y and the other X's are hydrogen; Y is a divalent conjugated rigid central linkage group; and the composition exhibits nonlinear optical properties upon orientation.
- 3. The cured or polymerized polymer of claim 2, wherein the electron-withdrawing group, X, is selected from the group consisting of --NO.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 R, --SO.sub.2 CH.sub.2 F, --SO.sub.2 CHF.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 CF.sub.3, --S(NSO.sub.2 CF.sub.3)CF.sub.3, --CF.sub.3, --CO.sub.2 R, --COCF.sub.3, cyano cyanovinyl, dicyanovinyl, and tricyanovinyl.
- 4. The cured or polymerized polymer of claim 2, wherein the divalent conjugated group Y, is selected from the group consisting of --C.tbd.C--, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --CR.sup.1 .dbd.CR.sup.1 --, --C.tbd.C--C.tbd.C--, --CR.sup.1 .dbd.N--, --N.dbd.CR.sup.1 --, and --N.dbd.N--; and R.sup.1 is hydrogen.
- 5. The cured or polymerized polymer of claim 2, wherein Q is hydrogen or an epoxy group.
- 6. A composition of claim 5, the novolac of 4-nitro-4'-hydroxystilbene, wherein D is oxygen, Q is hydrogen, one X is a nitro group in the para position with respect to Y and the other X's are hydrogen, Y is --CR.sup.1 .dbd.R.sup.1 --; and R.sup.1 is hydrogen.
- 7. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 5 wherein A is --CH.sub.2 --; D is oxygen, Q is an epoxy group, one X from (X).sub.5 is a nitro group in the para position with respect to Y and the other X's are hydrogen, Y is --CR.sup.1 .dbd.R.sup.1 --; and R.sup.1 is hydrogen.
- 8. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 1 which has been oriented.
- 9. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 2 which has been oriented.
- 10. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 3 which has been oriented.
- 11. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 4 which has been oriented.
- 12. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 1 which has been oriented.
- 13. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 5 which has been oriented.
- 14. A cured or polymerized polymer of claim 7 which has been oriented.
