Claims
- 1. A method of decorating a sheet metal substrate comprising the steps of direct-roller coating said substrate with a pigmented or unpigmented thermosettable composition comprising an alkaline aqueous blend having a binder consisting essentially of:
- A. a latex of a water-insoluble addition copolymer obtained by emulsion polymerization a molecular weight of from 70,000 to 2,000,000 of (1) a monovinyl aromatic monomer, (2) at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, (3) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer having an amide or a hydroxyl group, and (4) an olefinically unsaturated monomer having a carboxyl group, the amount of (3) being from 1.5 to 5 percent, and the amount of (4) being from 0.5 to 2 percent, based on the total weight of monomers, the Tg of the copolymer being below 0.degree. C., and,
- B. a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde reaction product or a water-soluble methanol or ethanol ether thereof, the weight ratio of A to B on a solids basis being from 35:65 to 65:35, the minimum film-forming temperature of the composition being no higher than about 15.degree. C., and the solids content of the composition being between 40 and 80 percent, curing and thermosetting said coating, and mechanically forming said sheet metal into articles of manufacture the final thickness of the coating being 0.05 to 5 mils.
- 2. The method of claim 1 in which B is a methyl ether of the urea-formaldehyde reaction product.
- 3. The method of claim 2 in which the mole ratio of urea:formaldehyde:methanol is in the range of about 1/1.75-3/2-3.5, the composition contains a nonionic emulsifier and a volatile base and said molecular weight is at least about 250,000.
- 4. The method of claim 3 in which (1) is styrene or vinyltoluene, (2) is an ester of at least one of acrylic acid and an alkanol having from about 2 to 12 carbon atoms, or an ester of methacrylic acid and an alkanol having from about 6 to 14 carbon atoms, (3) is at least one of methacrylamide, acrylamide, hydroxyethyl acrylate or methacrylate, or hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate, and (4) is acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or itaconic acid, and the Tg of the copolymer is below -15.degree. C.
- 5. The method of claim 4 in which (1) is styrene, (2) is butyl acrylate, (3) is at least one of hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methacrylamide, and (4) is methacrylic acid, the respective relative amounts by weight of (1), (2), (3), and (4) are in the ranges 40-50/50-60/1-3/1-2, the total being from 92 to 115, and which composition contains a volatile tertiary amine.
- 6. The method of claim 5 in which a pigment is present, the relative weight of pigment to A plus B being from 5:95 to 60:40, the total being 100.
- 7. A shaped sheet metal article containing a cured coating having a thickness of 0.05 to 5 mils of a pigmented or unpigmented thermosettable composition adapted for direct-roller coating of metals comprising an alkaline aqueous blend having a binder consisting essentially of:
- A. a latex of a water-insoluble addition copolymer obtained by emulsion polymerization having a molecular weight of from 250,000 to 1,000,000 of (1) a monovinyl aromatic monomer, (2) at least one ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, (3) at least one olefinically unsaturated monomer having an amide or a hydroxyl group, and (4) an olefinically unsaturated monomer having a carboxyl group, the amount of (3) being from 1.5 to 5 percent and the amount of (4) being from .5 to 2 percent, based on the total weight of monomers, the Tg of the copolymer being below 0.degree. C., and
- B. a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde reaction product or a water-soluble methanol or ethanol ether thereof, the weight ratio of A to B on a solids basis being from 35:65 to 65:35, the minimum film-forming temperature of the composition being no higher than about 15.degree. C., and the solids content of the composition being between 40 and 80 percent.
- 8. The method of claim 1 in which (3) consists of a monomer having an amide group and said molecular weight is at least about 250,000.
- 9. The method of claim 1 in which (3) consists of a monomer having a hydroxyl group and said molecular weight is at least about 250,000.
- 10. The method of claim 5 in which (3) consists of hydroxyethyl methacrylate.
- 11. The method of claim 5 in which (3) is methacrylamide.
