Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula ##STR181## wherein A.sub.4 is --OH, --NH.sub.2, --COOH, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or hydrogen, R.sub.20 is hydrogen or nitro,
- R.sub.21 is hydrogen, nitro, --NH--CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --Z.sub.2, --CH.sub.2 --Z.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 --NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --Z.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --CO--CH.sub.2 --Z.sub.2, --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --Z.sub.2, ##STR182## R.sub.22 is hydrogen, nitro, --SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.22a).sub.2, --SO.sub.2 --NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --OH, --CH.sub.2 --Z.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 --NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --Z.sub.2, --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --Z.sub.2, --NH--CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.s --Z.sub.2, ##STR183## wherein each R.sub.22a is independently C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.23 is hydrogen or methyl,
- R.sub.24 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, --(CH.sub.2).sub.p --Z.sub.2, benzyl, --N(R.sub.30).sub.2, --(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --OCH.sub.3, --CH.sub.2 --CH(CH.sub.3)--N(R.sub.30).sub.2 or --CH.sub.2 --C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --N(R.sub.30).sub.2,
- wherein each
- R.sub.30 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.24a is C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.152 is methyl or carboxy, ##STR184## wherein Z.sub.o is --S--, --O-- or --NR.sub.35 '--,
- wherein
- R.sub.35 ' is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or (C.sub.1-4 -alkoxy)carbonylmethyl, and
- each
- R.sub.127 and m are as defined below, and
- yo' is --OH or --NH.sub.2,
- wherein each
- Z.sub.2 is independently --NH.sub.2, --N(R.sub.o).sub.2, --N.sup..sym. (R.sub.o).sub.3 A.sup..crclbar., ##STR185## wherein each R.sub.o is independently methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, benzyl, acetylmethyl or benzoylmethyl, with the proviso that no nitrogen atom contains more than one member of the group consisting of benzyl, acetylmethyl and benzoylmethyl, and no nitrogen atom contains more than two 2-hydroxyethyl groups,
- each
- R.sub.127 is independently methyl or ethyl, and
- m is 0, 1 or 2,
- each
- A.sup..crclbar. is independently a non-chromophoric anion,
- each
- p is independently 1, 2 or 3, and
- each
- s is independently 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6,
- with the provisos that (i) the compound contains at least two basic water-solubilizing groups, (ii) at least one of R.sub.20 and R.sub.21 is other than nitro, (iii) R.sub.21 and R.sub.22 are different unless both are hydrogen, (iv) R.sub.20 is hydrogen when both R.sub.21 and R.sub.22 are hydrogen, and (v) at least one of R.sub.20 -R.sub.23 is hydrogen.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 wherein one of R.sub.21 and R.sub.22 is hydrogen, and the other is other than hydrogen.
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 wherein A.sub.4 is --OH, --NH.sub.2, --COOH or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, with the proviso that the compound contains 2 to 4 basic water-solubilizing groups.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1 having the formula ##STR186## wherein D.sub.10 is ##STR187## wherein R.sub.23 is hydrogen or methyl,
- R.sub.33 ' is hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy or carboxy,
- R.sub.34 is hydrogen, nitro, --SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2 or --CH.sub.2 --Z.sub.2, and
- R.sub.35 is hydrogen, nitro, --SO.sub.2 NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.2 --OH, --SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --SO.sub.2 NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --N(CH.sub.3).sub.2 or ##STR188## R.sub.24 ' is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, n-butyl, i-butyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, benzyl, dimethylamino, --(CH.sub.2).sub.m' --Z.sub.2, ##STR189## or --CH.sub.2 --C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --N(CH.sub.3).sub.2, and
- d' is 0 or 1,
- wherein each
- Z.sub.2 is independently --NH.sub.2, --N(R.sub.o).sub.2, --N.sup..sym. (R.sub.o).sub.3 A.sup..crclbar., ##STR190## wherein each R.sub.o is independently methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, benzyl, acetylmethyl or benzoylmethyl, with the proviso that no nitrogen atom contains more than one member of the group consisting of benzyl, acetylmethyl and benzoylmethyl, and no nitrogen atom contains more than two 2-hydroxyethyl groups,

- m is 0, 1 or 2, and
- p is 1, 2 or 3,

- A.sup..crclbar. is independently a non-chromophoric anion, and

- m' is independently 2 or 3,
- with the provisos that (i) R.sub.34 and R.sub.35 are different or R.sub.34 and R.sub.35 are both hydrogen, (ii) when R.sub.35 is 2,4--(bis(3'-diethylamino)propylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-6-ylamino or --SO.sub.2 NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.3 --N(CH.sub.3).sub.2, at least one of R.sub.23 and R.sub.34 is other than hydrogen, (iii) the --N.dbd.N-- radical attached to ring E is in the 3- or 4-position, and (iv) the compound contains at least two basic water-solubilizing groups.
- 5. A compound according to claim 4
