Claims
- 1. An aluminum matrix composite, comprising:
- a body of matrix metal comprising aluminum having embedded therein throughout its bulk (1) a plurality of discrete bodies of at least one ceramic filler material chemically distinct from aluminum nitride and (2) aluminum nitride, at least some of said aluminum nitride characterized as discrete, discontinuous bodies each contacted by only said matrix metal, and at least some other of said aluminum nitride characterized as a surface layer covering at least a portion of said at least one ceramic filler material.
- 2. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 1, wherein said at least one filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of oxides, nitrides, borides and carbides.
- 3. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 1, wherein said at least One filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of particles, platelets, spheres, pellets and fibers.
- 4. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 3, wherein said fibers comprise at least one member selected from the group consisting of a multifilament tow and a refractory fiber cloth.
- 5. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 3, wherein said fibers comprise at least one member selected from the group consisting of tubules and whiskers.
- 6. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 1, wherein said at least one filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of alumina, magnesia, titania, zirconia, hafnia, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, titanium diboride, aluminum dodecaboride, silicon nitride, and zirconium nitride.
- 7. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 1, wherein said at least one filler material comprises a ceramic coated filler material.
- 8. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 1, wherein said matrix metal further comprises at least one alloying element selected from the group consisting of magnesium, iron, silicon, copper, manganese, zinc and chromium.
- 9. An aluminum matrix composite, comprising:
- aluminum nitride and at least one ceramic filler material chemically distinct from aluminum nitride, each of said aluminum nitride and ceramic filler material dispersed throughout a three-dimensionally interconnected matrix metal comprising aluminum, said aluminum nitride having at least two separate and distinct forms comprising 1) discrete, discontinuous bodies and 2) a surface layer coating at least a portion of said ceramic filler material.
- 10. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 9, wherein said discrete, discontinuous bodies of said aluminum nitride are dispersed substantially uniformly throughout said matrix metal.
- 11. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 9, wherein said at least one ceramic filler material comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of particles, platelets, spheres, pellets and fibers.
- 12. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 9, wherein said discrete, discontinuous bodies of aluminum nitride are contacted by only said matrix metal.
- 13. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 9, wherein said surface layer comprises a discrete body of aluminum nitride.
- 14. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 9, wherein said surface layer covers substantially all surfaces of said at least one ceramic filler material.
- 15. An aluminum matrix composite, comprising:
- aluminum nitride and at least one ceramic filler material chemically distinct from said aluminum nitride, each of said aluminum nitride and said ceramic filler embedded by a three-dimensionally interconnected matrix metal comprising aluminum, said aluminum nitride comprising 1) a surface layer coating at least a portion of said at least one ceramic filler material, and 2) a plurality of discrete bodies dispersed substantially uniformly throughout said matrix metal and each of said bodies contacted by only said matrix metal.
- 16. The aluminum matrix composite of claim 15, wherein said at least one ceramic filler material comprises at least one fiber.
- 17. An aluminum matrix composite, comprising:
- a three-dimensionally interconnected matrix metal comprising aluminum embedding: 1) at least one ceramic filler material comprising a plurality of discrete bodies, said at least one ceramic filler material further comprising at least one material selected from the group consisting of oxides, carbides, borides, silicon nitride and zirconium nitride; and 2) aluminum nitride, said aluminum nitride having at least two separate and distinct forms comprising i) discrete bodies each contacted by only said matrix metal, and ii) a coating on at least a portion of said at least one ceramic filler material.
