Claims
- 1. An apparatus for sealing a beaded top cover on a generally U-shaped metallic housing having spaced vertical sidewalls terminating in vertical flanges, the apparatus comprising:
- a carrier adapted to be positioned adjacent one surface of the housing during relative lateral movement between said housing and said carrier; and
- plural roller dies rotatably mounted to said carrier and laterally spaced from one another to progressively bend and crimp the flanges formed on said housing about a raised bead formed on said top cover, wherein each of said plural roller dies includes a pair of registration members each dispersed in abutting registry with said housing vertical side walls to provide structural support to said housing during sealing.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least a first one of said plural roller dies includes an annular camming surface formed to bend said flange into a position generally overlaying said raised bend formed on said housing.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein a least one of said plural roller dies includes a last annular camming surface having a configuration substantially complimentary to the configuration of said raised bead to crimp said flange about said raised bead.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said first one of said plural roller dies includes a first annular camming surface and a second one of said plural roller dies includes a second annular camming surface, said first and second annular camming surfaces formed to progressively bend said flange into a position generally overlaying said raised bead formed on said housing.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the total number of said plural roller dies mounted to said carrier is selected to progressively bend and crimp said flange about said raised bead without fracturing said flange.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said last annular camming surface formed on said last one of said plural roller dies comprises an annular recess having a radius substantially equal to the radius of said raised bead plus the wall thickness of said flange.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein each of said registration members comprises an annular rim formed on said plural roller dies sized to contact a side wall of said housing.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said registration member comprises a pair of annular rims formed on said plural roller dies, each sized to contact a side wall of said housing.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said flange is formed having a wall thickness less than the wall thickness of said housing.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said annular rim is formed having a diameter sized to extend along a portion of the side wall of said housing sufficient to prevent buckling of said side wall of said housing.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said plural roller dies are rotatably mounted to said carriage about parallel axes.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said first annular camming surface is formed having a frusto-conical shaped configuration.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein said second annular camming surface is formed having a generally cylindrical configuration.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said carrier includes a cylindrical shank sized to be received within a tool holder.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of said roller dies rotate about an axis of rotation perpendicular to the direction of relative lateral movement between said housing and said carrier.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said plural roller dies comprise three roller dies.
