Claims
- 1. A process for continuously depositing a layer having a composition of at least two components of metal and metal oxide and/or metal sulfide upon a moving substrate which process comprises applying onto at least one surface of said substrate the components of said layer from a metal vapor stream into which stream is introduced at least one substance from the group consisting of oxygen, water, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide, and controlling the amount of oxygen, water, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide introduced into different regions of said metal vapor stream as the surface to be coated is moved so as to coat the substrate with a layer having varying compositions of said at least two components.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said layer is a graded layer having a composition which varies the proportions of its at least two components by at least 10% of one of the components to the sum of all the components over a thickness of at least 15 .ANG. and where the amount of oxygen, sulfur, water or hydrogen sulfide is locally varied within the metal vapor stream to coat the substrate with varying ratios of said two components through the thickness of said layer.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said locally varied amount of water, oxygen, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide is achieved by splitting a metal vapor stream and introducing said oxygen, water, sulfur, or hydrogen sulfide into fewer than all of the portions of the stream, and having the different portions of said stream impact the surface to be coated at different locations on said substrate.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein said metal vapor is a vapor of a metal selected from the class consisting of aluminum, tin, chromium, nickel, titanium, cobalt, zinc, iron, lead, manganese, copper and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said metal is selected from the class consisting of aluminum, tin, chromium, nickel, titanium, zinc, and mixtures thereof.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said metal comprises aluminum.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein oxygen or water is introduced into said metal vapor stream.
- 8. The process of claim 5 wherein oxygen or water is introduced into said metal vapor stream.
