Claims
- 1. A method of segregating solid fuel comprising measuring a volume of said solid fuel by placing said fuel into a first hopper and discharging a predetermined volume from said first hopper by pushing said fuel through an opening in said first hopper;
- decompacting said fuel by dropping said measured volume of fuel directly into a second hopper;
- further decompacting said fuel by mixing said fuel in said second hopper using upwardly inclined conveyor;
- removing said fuel from said second hopper using said conveyor.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising burning said fuel to release energy, measuring said released energy and controlling the rate at which fuel is removed from said second hopper in accordance with said energy measurement.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of pushing said solid fuel through an opening in said first hopper is performed using a ram pusher.
- 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising operating said inclined conveyor at a speed selected to produce a tumbling of said solid fuel within said second hopper.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of mixing said solid fuel is performed at least in part by underraking said fuel within said second hopper using said upwardly inclined conveyor.
- 6. A method of segregating solid fuel comprising measuring a volume of said solid fuel by placing said solid fuel into a first hopper and discharging a predetermined volume from said first hopper;
- decompacting said solid fuel by displacing said measured volume from said hopper and by dropping said measured volume a predetermined distance directly into a second hopper disposed below said first hopper, wherein said predetermined distance is determined by measuring the quantity of fuel in said second hopper and adjusting the quantity of fuel displaced from said first hopper in accordance with said measurement;
- further decompacting said solid by mixing said solid fuel in said second hopper using upwardly inclined conveyor;
- removing said solid fuel from said second hopper using said conveyor.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of measuring the quantity of solid fuel in said second hopper is performed by detecting the level of solid fuel in said second hopper.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of adjusting the quantity of fuel displaced from said first hopper is performed by adjusting the rate at which said solid fuel is discharged from said first hopper.
- 9. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of discharging a predetermined volume from said first hopper is performed using a ram pusher.
- 10. The method of claim 6 further comprising measuring the quantity of solid fuel in said second hopper by determining the level of fuel in said second hopper and controlling the rate at which fuel is discharged from said first hopper to thereby regulate said predetermined distance.
- 11. The method of claim 6 further comprising burning said fuel to release energy, measuring said released energy and controlling the rate at which fuel is removed from said second hopper in accordance with said energy measurement.
- 12. The method of claim 6 wherein said step of discharging a predetermined volume is performed by pushing said solid fuel through an opening in said first hopper.
- 13. The method of claim 6 further comprising displacing said measured volume from said first hopper using a ram pusher operable at a first speed and at a second speed; and
- determining the quantity of solid fuel in said second hopper by measuring the level thereof and selecting either said first speed or said second speed based upon said measured level.
