Claims
- 1. A method for converting methane to higher hydrocarbon products and coproduct water which comprises contacting a gas comprising methane and a gaseous oxidant with silica at a temperature within the range of about 700.degree. to 1200.degree. C., said contacting being conducted in the substantial absence of reducible metal oxides.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the gaseous oxidant comprises molecular oxygen.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the gaseous oxidant comprises oxides of nitrogen.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the oxides of nitrogen comprise N.sub.2 O.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature is within the range of about 800.degree. to 1000.degree. C.
