Claims
- 1. A method in a selective call receiver for receiving a group message comprised within a communication signal having
- an address field having a multiplicity of address signals including an individual address and a plurality of addresses, the address field followed by
- a plurality of message signals including an individual message associated with the individual address and a common group message associated with the plurality of addresses, wherein the communication signal further has an information field having a first data field having a multiplicity of vectors corresponding to the multiplicity of address signals, each vector for associating each address signal of the multiplicity of address signals with a corresponding message signal of the plurality of message signals, and the information field also having a second data field having the plurality of message signals including the individual message and the common group message located therein, the method comprising the steps of:
- receiving one of the multiplicity of address signals within the address field to produce a received address signal;
- determining if the received address signal matches a predetermined address assigned to the selective call receiver;
- associating the received address signal with one of the plurality of message signals in response thereto, wherein said step of associating further includes the steps of:
- decoding one of the multiplicity of vectors from the first data field to produce a received vector, the received vector being associated with the received address signal; and
- locating the one of the plurality of message signals in the second data field in response to the vector; and
- receiving and decoding the common group message in response to said step of associating if the received address signal is a member of the plurality of addresses.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said step of receiving and decoding further includes receiving and decoding the individual message in response to said step of associating if the received address signal is the individual address.
- 3. A method of transmitting a group message comprised within a communication signal having
- an address field having a multiplicity of address signals including an individual address and a plurality of addresses the address field followed by
- a plurality of message signals including an individual message and a common group message associated with the plurality of addresses, wherein the communication signal further has an information field having a first data field and a second data field;
- the method comprising the steps of:
- grouping the multiplicity of addresses within the address field;
- associating the plurality of addresses with the common group message, said step of associating further including the steps of:
- determining a location of the common group message within the second data field;
- creating a plurality of vector signals indicative thereof, each vector signal of the plurality of vector signals corresponding to each address of the plurality of addresses; and
- locating the plurality of vector signals within the first data field and locating the common group message within the second data field; and
- transmitting the address field followed by the plurality of message signals, said step of transmitting further including the steps of:
- transmitting the first data field after the address field; and
- transmitting the second data field after the first data field.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein
- the second data field has a multiplicity of positions, each position having an information word for locating at least a portion of a message signal therein,
- said step of locating the common group message locates the common group message in a plurality of information words, and
- each vector signal indicates a location of the common group message by indicating a position of the plurality of information words.
- 5. A method of transmitting a group message comprised within a communication signal having
- an address field having a multiplicity of address signals including an individual address and a plurality of addresses, the address field followed by
- a plurality of message signals including an individual message and a common group message associated with the plurality of addresses,
- wherein the communication signal further has an information field having a first data field and a second data field, and the individual message is associated with the individual address, the method comprising the steps of:
- grouping the multiplicity of addresses within the address field;
- associating the plurality of addresses with the common group message and associating the individual address with the individual message signal, said step of associating the individual address further including the steps of:
- determining a location of the individual message within the second data field;
- creating a vector signal indicative thereof; and
- locating the vector signal within the first data field;
- said step of associating the plurality of addresses further including the steps of:
- determining a location of the common group message within the second data field;
- creating a plurality of vector signals indicative thereof, each vector signal of the plurality of vector signals corresponding to each address of the plurality of addresses; and
- locating the plurality of vector signals within the first data field;
- locating the individual message and the common group message within the second data field; and
- transmitting the address field followed by the plurality of message signals, said step of transmitting further including the steps of:
- transmitting the first data field after the address field; and
- transmitting the second data field after the first data field.
- 6. A method of transmitting a group message comprised within a communication signal having
- an address field having a multiplicity of address signals including an individual address and a plurality of addresses, the address field followed by
- a plurality of message signals including an individual message and a common group message associated with the plurality of addresses, wherein the communication signal further has an information field having a first data field and a second data field, the method comprising the step of:
- grouping the multiplicity of addresses within the address field;
- accumulating the plurality of message signals;
- determining if a portion of a first message signal of the plurality of message signals matches at least a portion of a second message signal of the plurality of message signals;
- combining the matching portions to form the common group message, and locating the plurality of message signals within the second data field, and
- associating the plurality of addresses with the common group message, said step of associating further including the steps of:
- determining a location of the common group message within the second data field;
- creating a plurality of vector signals indicative thereof, each vector signal of the plurality of vector signals corresponding to each address of the plurality of addresses; and
- locating the plurality of vector signals within the first data field; and
- transmitting the address field followed by the plurality of message signals, said step of transmitting further including the steps of:
- transmitting the first data field after the address field; and
- transmitting the second data field after the first data field.
- 7. A transmitter for transmitting a group message comprised within a communication signal having
- an address field having a multiplicity of address signals including an individual address and a plurality of address, the address field followed by
- a plurality of message signals including an individual message and a common group message associated with the plurality of addresses, wherein the communication signal further has an information field having a first data field and a second data field, the transmitter comprising:
- a message accumulator for receiving and accumulating the multiplicity of addresses and the plurality of message signals;
- an address field generator coupled to the receiver for generating the address field by grouping the multiplicity of addresses within the address field;
- a data field generator coupled to said message accumulator and said receiver for grouping the plurality of message signals by associating the plurality of addresses with the common group message, said data field generator futher comprising:
- a second data field generator for locating the common group message within the second data field, and
- a first data field generator for:
- determining a location of the common group message within the second data field;
- creating a plurality of vector signals indicative thereof, each vector signal of the plurality of vector signals corresponding to each address of the plurality of addresses; and
- locating the plurality of vector signals within the first data field;
- a transmitter coupled to said address field generator and said data field generator for transmitting the address field followed by the plurality of message signals, and further wherein
- said transmitter transmits the first data field after the address field and the second data field after the first data field.
