Claims
- 1. An alignment kit for aligning components of a drum assembly associated with a video recording device, the drum assembly including a stationary lower drum connected to a base, a stationary upper drum connected to the lower drum via a drum support, a spindle assembly rotatably coupled to the base about a spindle axis, and a rotatable inner drum attached to the spindle assembly and including a plurality of record/reproduce heads located between the lower and upper drums for digital video recording and reproducing, the alignment kit comprising:an indicator tool including a support member configured to be mounted to a the spindle assembly or inner drum of the drum assembly, the support member supporting a measuring device capable of measuring the position of the upper drum or drum support relative to the spindle axis when the support member is mounted to the spindle assembly or inner drum and thereafer rotated about the spindle axis; and a drum alignment tool including an alignment plate configured to be secured to the spindle assembly or inner drum of the drum assembly, the alignment plate having a reference surface for receiving an inner surface of the drum support so as to position the inner surface relative to the spindle axis when the alignment plate is secured to the spindle assembly or inner drum of said drum assembly.
- 2. The alignment kit as recited in claim 1 wherein the drum alignment tool further includesa positioning mechanism coupled to said alignment plate and adapted to adjust the position of said drum support so that said drum support abuts said reference surface of said alignment plate, wherein said drum support is placed in said reference position relative to the position of said spindle assembly when said drum support abuts said reference surface.
- 3. The kit as recited in claim 2 wherein, said drum support has an inner peripheral surface that engages an outer peripheral surface of said upper drum.
- 4. The kit as recited in claim 3 wherein the diameter of said alignment plate coincides with the diameter of said upper drum.
- 5. The kit as recited in claim 3 wherein the positioning mechanism includes a biasing screw for adjusting the position of said drum support, said biasing screw being configured to engage the outer peripheral surface of the said drum support, and to apply a force thereto so as to abut the inner peripheral surface of said drum support to the reference surface of said alignment plate.
- 6. The kit as recited claim 2 wherein said alignment plate includes an upper plate for providing the reference surface and a lower plate for engaging said component of said drum assembly.
- 7. The kit as recited in claim 2 wherein said positioning mechanism includes an alignment bracket that is detachably coupled to said alignment plate, and a biasing screw that is threadably coupled to said alignment bracket, said alignment bracket placing said biasing screw away from said reference surface of said alignment so as to produce a gap therebetween, said biasing screw being configured to engage said structural support when said structural support is disposed within said gap, and to apply a force thereto so as to abut said structural support against the reference surface of said alignment plate.
- 8. An alignment apparatus for checking the alignment of a drum assembly associated with a video recording device, the drum assembly including a stationary lower drum connected to a base, a stationary upper drum connected to the lower drum, a spindle assembly rotatably coupled to the base about a spindle axis, and a rotatable inner drum attached to the spindle assembly and including a plurality of record/reproduce heads located between the lower and upper drums for digital video recording and reproducing, the alignment tool comprising:a support member configured to be mounted to a top surface of the rotatable inner drum via one or more screws, wherein the support member is capable of rotating about the spindle axis when the support member is mounted to the top surface of the rotatable inner drum; a dial indicator assembly slidably received within the support member, the dial indicator assembly including a probe for contacting a peripheral surface of the upper drum when the alignment tool is in use, a reference distance between the probe and the spindle axis being set by sliding the dial indicator assembly relative to the support member when the support member is mounted to the top surface of the rotatable inner drum, the dial indicator assembly being configured to measure displacement at multiple points along the peripheral surface of the upper drum with respect to the reference distance when the probe is set next to the peripheral surface of the upper drum and thereafter rotated around the peripheral surface of the upper drum.
- 9. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein the video recording device is a DVW model video recording device.
- 10. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein the support member includes a guide opening for slidably receiving a portion of the dial indicator assembly and a screw mechanism for securing the position of the dial indicator assembly relative to the support member.
- 11. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein the dial indicator assembly further includes a dial indicator for outputting the displacement.
- 12. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein the probe includes a contact ball, and wherein the contact ball is biased towards the peripheral surface of the upper drum by a spring means so as to produce readings in a direction that is radially aligned and substantially perpendicular to the spindle axis.
- 13. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein both positive and negative deviations along the peripheral surface of the upper drum are ascertained when the dial indicator assembly is rotated about the spindle axis.
- 14. The alignment tool as recited in claim 8 wherein the upper drum is connected to the lower drum via a drum support and wherein the probe is further configured for contacting a peripheral surface of the drum support when the alignment tool is in use, the dial indicator assembly being configured to measure displacement at multiple points along the peripheral surface of the drum support with respect to the reference distance when the probe is set next to the peripheral surface of the drum support and thereafter rotated around the peripheral surface of the drum support.
