Claims
- 1. A system for analyzing the performance of an event-producing data processing system comprising:at least one control station for analyzing events and specifying at least one filter designating information to be monitored; and at least one event concentrator coupled to the at least one control station for collecting events generated by an event creator in response to monitoring execution of program code, the program code unmodified by the event creator, the generated events associated with the program code to be monitored designated by the at least one filter.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one filter designates information to be collected associated with at least one of: a machine, a process, a component, an in-process event creator, a dynamic event creator, an event, or a thread.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one filter comprises a Boolean expression.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein the Boolean expression comprises a set of variables and the Boolean expression is modifiable by binding a subset of the variables.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one filter is sent to at least one machine, process, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event or thread.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein a plurality of filters are combined by the at least one event concentrator.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one control station provides a graphical user interface for specifying the at least one filter.
- 8. The system of claim 7, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a window wherein a representation of the at least one filter can be entered as text.
- 9. The system of claim 7, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a textual representation of the at least one filter for selection.
- 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the information to be monitored is at least one of debugging or tracing information.
- 11. A system for analyzing the performance of a data processing system comprising a first data source and a second data source, the system comprising:a control station that analyzes events and specifies at least one filter for designating information to be collected; an in-process event creator that generates events associated with the first data source as specified by the at least one filter, in response to monitoring execution of program code, the program code unmodified by the event creator, a dynamic event creator that generates events periodically as specified by the at least one filter, in response to monitoring execution of program code, the program code unmodified by the event creator, the events associated with the second data source; and an event concentrator that collects events from the in-process event creator and from the dynamic event creator, and sends the collected events to the control station.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the at least one filter specifies an element for which information is to be collected, wherein the element comprises at least one machine, process, component, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event, or thread.
- 13. The system of claim 11, wherein the filter comprises a modifiable Boolean expression comprising a set of variables, the Boolean expression modifiable by binding a subset of the set of variables.
- 14. The system of claim 11, wherein the at least one filter is sent to at least one machine, process, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event or thread.
- 15. A method for analyzing the performance of a data processing system, the method comprising:specifying at least one filter for designating information to be collected, the at least one filter comprising a Boolean expression comprising a set of unbound variables, wherein each variable in the set of variables represents at least one machine, process, component, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event, or thread; and collecting events designated by the at least one filter, the events generated in response to monitoring execution of program code, the program code unmodified by the monitoring.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising modifying the Boolean expression by binding a subset of the set of unbound variables.
- 17. The method of claim 15, further comprising combining at least two filters to generate a combined filter and collecting events designated by the combined filter.
- 18. The method of claim 15, further comprising specifying the at least one filter by selecting at least one of a plurality of filters from a menu on a graphical display.
- 19. The method of claim 15, further comprising specifying the at least one filter by entering a textual representation of the at least one filter.
- 20. The method of claim 15, further comprising debugging or tracing a process.
- 21. A computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions for:specifying at least one filter for designating information to be collected by generating a Boolean expression of variables, the variables representing one or more machines, processes, components, event creators, events or threads; and collecting events designated by the at least one filter, the events generated in response to monitoring execution of program code, the program code unmodified by the monitoring, the events associated with the designated information to be collected.
- 22. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further comprising computer-executable instructions for modifying the Boolean expression by binding a subset of the variables.
- 23. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further comprising computer-executable instructions for combining at least two filters to generate a combined filter and collecting events specified by the combined filter.
- 24. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further comprising computer-executable instructions for selecting the at least one filter from a graphical display.
- 25. The computer-readable medium of claim 21 further comprising selecting the at least one filter by entering a textual representation of the at least one filter in a graphical window.
- 26. A system for analyzing the performance of an event-producing data processing system comprising:at least one control station for analyzing events and specifying at least one filter designating information to be monitored, wherein the at least one filter comprises a Boolean expression comprising a set of variables and the Boolean expression is modifiable by binding a subset of the variables, the filter designating information to be collected associated with at least one of: a machine, a process, a component, an in-process event creator, a dynamic event creator, an event, or a thread, and at least one event concentrator coupled to the at least one control station for collecting the information to be monitored.
- 27. A system for analyzing the performance of a data processing system comprising a first data source that produces events and a second data source that produces events, the system comprising:a control station that analyzes events and specifies at least one filter, wherein the at least one filter comprises a modifiable Boolean expression and specifies an element for which information is to be collected, wherein the element comprises at least one machine, process, component, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event, or thread for designating information to be collected, the Boolean expression comprising a set of variables, the Boolean expression modifiable by binding a subset of the set of variables; an in-process event creator that collects events generated by the first data source; a dynamic event creator that collects events generated periodically by the second data source; and an event concentrator that collects events from the in-process event creator and from the dynamic event creator, and sends the collected events to the control station.
- 28. A method for analyzing the performance of a data processing system, the method comprising:specifying at least one filter for designating information to be collected, the at least one filter comprising a Boolean expression comprising a set of unbound variables, wherein each variable in the set of variables represents at least one machine, process, component, in-process event creator, dynamic event creator, event, or thread; modifying the Boolean expression by binding a subset of the set of unbound variables; and collecting events designated by the at least one filter.
- 29. A computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions for:specifying at least one filter for designating information to be collected by generating a Boolean expression of variables, the variables representing one or more machines, processes, components, event creators, events or threads; modifying the Boolean expression by binding a subset of the variables; and collecting events designated by the at least one filter.
