Claims
- 1. In an automatic palletizer for assembling layers of elongated packages on a pallet with each package in each layer arranged in a predetermined pattern, said palletizer being of the type which includes a shuttle plate on which said layers are formed, means for moving said shuttle plate over a pallet and means for wiping said layer off of said shuttle plate to deposit said layer over said pallet as said shuttle plate is retracted, each layer on said shuttle plate including two packages arranged end to end in abutting relationship and a plurality of other packages arranged side by side, the longitudinal extent of said two packages abutting each other end to end being less than the lateral extent of said other packages arranged side by side, the improvement comprising separating means for separating said two abutting packages, said separating means being operatively positioned above said pallet and arranged to be lowered into contact with said two abutting packages forming part of one layer at the point of their abutment for separating the abutting ends of said packages while said one layer is wiped off of said shuttle plate and deposited over said pallet whereby the outer ends of said packages arranged end to end on said pallet will be in line with the outer facing sides, respectively, of the outer two packages of said other packages arranged side by side on said pallet.
- 2. An automatic palletizer as defined in claim 1 wherein said separating means includes a member mounted for vertical movement, means for vertically moving said member, first and second spring arms extending vertically downwardly and laterally outwardly from said member, and a cushion member at the lower end of each spring arm, said cushion members being arranged for movement into respective engagement with said abutting ends of said two abutting packages when said shuttle plate is over said pallet, and said spring arms being adapted to deflect laterally outwardly upon engagement of said cushion members with said containers and in such a way that said abutting packages are spread apart by said spring arms as said shuttle plate is retracted.
