Claims
- 1. A method for the assembly of a pillow-top mattress cover having at least a top panel, a side panel, a gusset for connecting the top panel to the side panel, and flange material for attachment of the gusset to an inner spring, said method comprising the steps of:
- forming the gusset, said forming step including the steps of folding gusset material longitudinally to form two flaps joined at an edge, and stitching the folded gusset material along the edge at gusset stitch to maintain the gusset material in its folded condition;
- attaching a free outer edge of one flap of the gusset to an outer edge of the top panel with a stitching needle;
- during said attaching step, providing a mitered corner on the gusset where the gusset is to be attached to a rounded corner of the top panel; and
- securing the one flap of the gusset to the underside of the top panel.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said providing step comprises the steps of:
- interrupting said attaching step when the stitching needle is spaced a desired distance before an approaching corner of the top panel;
- locating the desired distance on the gusset as measured from the stitching needle to determine a location on the gusset which is to be attached to the approaching corner of the top panel;
- without removing the top panel from the stitching needle, mitering on a second sewing machine the location on the gusset which is to be attached to the approaching corner of the top panel; and
- resuming said attaching step.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said mitering step comprises the steps of:
- folding the gusset along a fold generally transverse to the folded edge at the location which is to be attached to the approaching corner of the top panel;
- placing the transverse fold of the gusset beneath a needle on the second sewing machine;
- stitching a first stitch on the gusset intersecting the transverse fold at an angle; and
- forming a second stitch which intersects the first stitch and intersects the transverse fold at an angle; and
- removing a portion of the gusset within an area defined by the first and second stitches and the transverse fold.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said forming step includes the step of intersecting the second stitch with the first stitch generally at the gusset stitch.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein said forming step comprises the step of attaching flange material to the gusset material at the gusset stitch during said stitching step and wherein said mitering step further comprises the step of mitering the flange material adjacent the location on the gusset which is to be attached to the approaching corner of the top panel.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein said resuming step comprises the steps of:
- retrieving the gusset from the second sewing machine;
- restarting stitching of the gusset to the top panel by the stitching needle; and
- pivoting the top panel through an angle of about 90.degree. at the approaching corner while continuing to stitch the top panel to the gusset.
- 7. Apparatus for assembly of a pillow-top mattress cover having at least a top panel, a side panel, a gusset for connecting the top panel to the side panel, and flange material for attachment of the gusset to an inner spring, the gusset having two flaps, said apparatus comprising:
- a gusset-forming machine for folding gusset material longitudinally to form a folded edge and the two flaps which are joined at the folded edge, and for stitching together the two flaps;
- a binding machine for securing a free edge of one flap of the gusset to an outer edge of the top panel;
- a sewing machine for providing a mitered corner to the gusset, said sewing machine being disposed sufficiently closed to said binding machine to allow the gusset to be mitered while the gusset is partially attached to the top panel and without removing the top panel from said binding machine; and
- a stitching machine for stitching the one flap of the gusset to an undersurface of the top panel.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said sewing machine comprises:
- means for programming the sewing machine to stitch a predetermined number of stitches; and
- means for cutting a segment from the gusset at the mitered corner of the gusset.
