Claims
- 1. An apparatus for attaching insert panels to carton blanks comprising:
- carton blank conveyor means for moving carton blanks along a predetermined displacement path so that each carton blank has a leading edge portion and a trailing edge portion;
- each carton blank having at least a plurality of leading end panel portions and a plurality of sidewall panel portions;
- carton blank folder means located along said displacement path for folding at least one of said leading end panel portions of each passing carton blank for providing an abutment surface;
- insert panel applicator means positioned along said displacement path for applying an insert panel to each passing carton blank;
- said insert panel having a leading edge portion and a trailing edge portion; and
- registration means for urging said leading edge portion of each insert panel into abutment with said abutment surface on said at least one of said leading end panel portions.
- 2. The invention of claim 1 and further comprising:
- attaching means for fixedly attaching each insert panel to an associated carton blank wherein said attachment means comprises adhesive applicator means for applying adhesive to at least one of said carton blanks or said insert panels.
- 3. The invention of claim 2 and further comprising:
- compression means for compressing each carton blank and associated insert panel in the region of said adhesive.
- 4. The invention of claim 1 wherein said registration means comprises:
- force applying means for applying a force on said insert panel to move said insert panel relative to said carton blank in the same direction as said predetermined displacement path and into contact with said abutment surface.
- 5. The invention as in claim 4 wherein said force applying means comprises:
- at least one moving belt in contact with an upper surface of said insert panel.
- 6. The invention of claim 4 and further comprising:
- support means for supporting said insert panel at a predetermined distance from said carton blank.
- 7. The invention of claim 6 wherein said force applying means comprises:
- at least one moving belt in contact with an upper surface of said insert panel for moving said insert panel over said support means.
- 8. The invention of claim 1 wherein:
- said carton blank folder means folding a plurality of said plurality of leading end panel portions for providing a plurality of abutment surfaces.
- 9. The invention of claim 8 wherein said registration means comprises:
- force applying means for applying a force on said insert panel to move said insert liner relative to said carton blank in the same direction as said predetermined displacement path and into contact with said plurality of abutment surfaces.
- 10. The invention of claim 9 wherein said force applying means comprises:
- a plurality of moving belts in contact with an upper surface of said insert panel.
- 11. The invention of claim 9 and further comprising:
- support means for supporting said insert panel at a predetermined distance from said carton blank.
- 12. The invention of claim 11 wherein said force applying means comprises:
- a plurality of moving belts in contact with an upper furnace of said insert panel for moving said insert panel over said support means.
- 13. The invention of claim 1 wherein said carton blank conveyor means comprises:
- upper and lower moving belts having an edge portion of each of said carton blanks located therebetween; and
- at least one support means in contact with a portion of each of said carton blanks spaced from said edge portions.
- 14. The invention of claim 13 wherein said at least one support means comprises:
- at least one moving belt.
- 15. The invention of claim 13 and further comprising:
- a pair of spaced apart guide rails in contact with opposite edge portions of each of said insert panels to position each of said insert panels relative to each of said carton blanks.
- 16. The invention of claim 15 wherein:
- said carton blank folder means folding a plurality of said plurality of leading end panel portions for providing a plurality of abutment surfaces.
- 17. The invention of claim 16 wherein said registration means comprises:
- force applying means for applying a force on said insert panel to move said insert liner relative to said carton blank in the same direction as said predetermined displacement path and into contact with said plurality of abutment surfaces.
- 18. The invention of claim 17 and further comprising:
- support means for supporting said insert panel spaced a predetermined distance from said carton blank; and
- said force applying means comprises at least one moving belt in contact with an upper surface of said insert panel for moving said insert panel over said support means.
- 19. A method of preparing a plurality of flat carton blanks and flat insert panels for folding and gluing into reinforced carton configurations comprising the steps of:
- moving the carton blanks along a predetermined displacement path so that each carton blank has a leading portion and a trailing portion;
- deforming at least one leading end panel portion of each carton blank to provide an abutment surface projecting transversely of the direction of carton displacement;
- moving an insert panel along said displacement path;
- placing each insert panel in a predetermined registration position with an associated carton blank by urging a predetermined edge portion of each insert panel into abutting relationship with said abutment surface on an associated carton blank;
- fixedly attaching each registeringly positioned insert panel to each associated carton blank.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said placing of each insert panel in a predetermined registration position with each associated carton blank comprises:
- supporting each insert panel spaced a predetermined distance from said associated carton blank; and
- moving said insert panel at a velocity greater than that of said associated carton blank until said predetermined edge portion contacts said abutment surface.
