Claims
- 1. A biodegradable device for facilitating the healing of structural tissue deficiencies, comprising:
- a) a porous, macrostructure comprised of a biodegradable polymer in the form of a porous structure having cavities;
- b) a porous microstructure separate from the macrostructure and located in the cavities, said microstructure causing biochemical changes during the healing process, wherein the microstructure is in the form of a meshwork of randomly shaped, positioned and sized voids and wherein the microstructure is a carrier for a substance, selected from the group consisting of biologically active and therapeutic agents, for transporting such agent into the cavities.
- 2. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure is a biologically active substance for promoting growth of tissue in the cavities.
- 3. The biodegradable-device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure is a hydrophilic substance for attracting body fluid to the cavities.
- 4. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure is a chemotactic substance for causing cell migration to and aggregation into the voids by chemotaxis.
- 5. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the macrostructure is in the form of a filamentous velour.
- 6. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure has incorporated therein a solution containing the substance selected from the group consisting of biologically active and therapeutic agents for promoting growth of tissue in the voids.
- 7. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure has incorporated therein a substance selected from the group consisting of biologically active and therapeutic agents with such agent being evenly distributed in the microstructure.
- 8. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure is a carrier for a substance selected from the group consisting of drugs, biological modifiers, proteins, and antigens.
- 9. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the microstructure is an electronegative substance which provides an electronegative environment with respect to the structural tissue deficiencies for promoting growth of tissue in the voids.
- 10. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the macrostructure comprises a polymer of a homogenous poly(hydrox) acid or a co-polymer of two or more poly (hydrox) acids.
- 11. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the macrostructure comprises a polymer or co-polymer of an organic acid selected from the group consisting of lactic acid, glycolic acid, malic acid, alpha hydroxybutyric acid, and fumaric acid.
- 12. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the macrostructure is a carrier for a substance, selected from biologically active and therapeutic agents, from transporting such agents into the device.
- 13. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the macrostructure is a carrier for a substance selected from the group consisting of drugs, biological modifiers, proteins, and antigens.
- 14. The biodegradable device of claim 1, wherein the device is a biodegradable implant.
- 15. A biodegradable device for facilitating the healing of structural tissue deficiencies, comprising:
- a) a porous, macrostructure comprised of a biodegradable polymer in the form of a porous structure having interconnecting cavities;
- b) a porous microstructure comprised of chemotactic agent and being carried by and separate from the macrostructure and located in the cavities; and
