Claims
- 1. An improved brazing apparatus for bonding different materials together to form a cutting tooth wherein one of the materials is selected from boron nitride or PDC in the form of a disc which is brazed to a supportive tooth body formed of a hard carbide metal, the apparatus including a frame having a pair of opposing supportive heads, and the apparatus further comprises;
- a) a press means for moving a pair of opposing heads to a spaced relationship so that the disc is held in one of said heads in a cavity therein aligned with the opposite of said support head for bonding the disc to a tooth body;
- b) RF induction heater for heating a braze metal layer between said disc and said tooth body; and
- c) a gas flow supply means for providing a flow of inert or reducing gases through a passage to deliver flowing gases into intimate contact with the exposed face of said disc during heating.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said head includes passages formed therein to direct gas flow through said passages into contact with said disc at an exposed face and sides thereof, and said head encircles said disc.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said disc is a circular disc having a planar face on the top thereof; and said head incorporates a plurality of passages therethrough deployed at said cavity therein for snuggly fitting around said circular disc, and further wherein said passages are connected with the gas flow supply means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said head holding said disc includes a central disc conformed cavity and a surrounding lip to clamp a disc therein.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the disc is joined to a hard metal support in which the disc has a thickness in the range of 8.0-10.0 mm and diameter of at least 20 mm.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the disc diameter relates to thickness in mm given by:

- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the disc is a PDC disc joined to a support made of hard metal and having a cylindrical construction; and wherein the PDC disc is brazed thereto, said disc having a thickness to diameter relationship in mm given by:

- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the gas flows through a cooling device.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said disc is grasped by said head having fluid flow passages directing gas flow onto said disc.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said head for holding said disc is formed with passages directing gas flow through said passages into contact with said disc on the top face thereof.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein reducing or inert gas flow is pumped into said passages, and said support has a specified mass of metal so that cooling is achieved by directing heat from the braze metal into the metal support.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said support is held in a head in a cradling arrangement wherein said head is constructed of heat conducting steel, brass or cemented carbide.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said head includes passages to enable direct gas flow through said passages into contact with said disc at an exposed face and sides thereof.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said disc is formed as a circular disc having a planar face on the top thereof; and said head is constructed with a plurality of passages therethrough deployed at a cavity therein for snuggly fitting around said circular disc, and further connecting said passages with the gas flow supply means.
