Claims
- 1. A method of calibrating a reference oscillator in a wireless transceiver comprising:
supplying power to the reference oscillator to thereby cause the reference oscillator to generate a radio frequency signal; receiving the radio frequency signal in a measuring device; producing a measuring device reference signal; comparing the radio frequency signal to the measuring device reference signal; producing a correcton factor from the comparison; and storing the correction factor in the transceiver.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising coupling the correction factor to the reference oscillator to thereby adjust the frequency of the radio frequency signal.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the radio frequency signal is mixed with a base band or an IF signal.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the measuring device is a spectrum analyzer.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless transceiver comprises a wireless telephone.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the correction factor comprises a compensating value related to the frequency difference between the radio frequency and the reference frequency.
- 7. A method for modifying the frequency of an signal created by a reference frequency generator within a wireless communication device to generate a reference signal at a reference frequency, the method comprising:
initiating operation of an oscillator within a reference frequency generator, the oscillator capable of generating a signal at a frequency other than the reference frequency; receiving at the reference frequency generator a correction factor; utilizing the correction factor within the reference frequency generator to modify the signal generated by the oscillator; and responsive to the modifying, outputting from the reference frequency generator a reference signal at the reference frequency.
- 8. The method of claim 7, further comprising utilizing the reference signal from the reference frequency generator to acquire a pilot signal.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the correction factor is received from a memory.
- 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the correction factor is related to the difference between the frequency of the signal and the reference frequency.
- 11. A method of generating an offset value for use within a wireless communication device comprising:
generating an oscillator signal within a wireless communication device at an oscillator frequency, the oscillator frequency different than a desired reference frequency; outputting an output signal from the wireless communication device, the frequency of the output signal related to the oscillator frequency; receiving the output signal at a test equipment that is external to the wireless communication device; generating an external reference signal with a signal generator; comparing the output signal to an external reference signal; responsive to the comparing, generating an offset value; providing the offset value to the wireless communication device; and storing the offset value in the wireless communication device.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the external reference signal is generated by a spectrum analyzer.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein outputting an output signal comprises outputting a signal at a multiple of the frequency of the oscillator signal.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein the offset value is related to the difference between the frequency of the oscillator signal and the frequency of the external reference signal.
- 15. The method of claim 11, wherein the offset value comprises a value that is utilized to compensate the oscillator frequency to thereby reduce the difference between the oscillator frequency and the desired reference frequency.
- 16. A reference frequency generation system in a wireless communication device comprising:
a reference oscillator configured to generate an oscillator signal at an oscillator frequency, the oscillator frequency different than a desired reference frequency; a voltage controlled oscillator configured to generate a mixer input based the reference frequency; a memory in communication with the reference oscillator, the memory configured to store a correction factor; wherein the reference oscillator utilizes the correction factor to adjust the frequency of the oscillator signal from the oscillator frequency to the reference frequency.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the reference frequency is a multiple of a communication device carrier frequency.
- 18. The system of claim 16, wherein the correction factor is related to the difference between the oscillator frequency and the reference frequency.
- 19. The system of claim 16, further comprising a test port in communication with the memory for use in storing the correction factor.
- 20. The system of claim 16, further comprising a summing junction between the memory and the reference oscillator.
