Claims
- 1. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:means for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the gastrointestinal signal for producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a time of a gastrointestinal event; and means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a spatial location of the gastrointestinal event, wherein the converting means comprises a plurality of microphones for receiving gastrointestinal sound from a patient.
- 2. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 3. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining an amplitude threshold of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 4. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining gastrointestinal event spacing in response to the gastrointestinal event time-identifying means.
- 5. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 6. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 7. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for determining a decay characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 8. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 1 further comprising means for spatially localizing the gastrointestinal event.
- 9. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event comprising:a transducer for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; a converter for converting the gastrointestinal signal to a digitized gastrointestinal signal; a gastrointestinal event-time marker generator; and a gastrointestinal event spatial location identifier wherein the transducer comprises a plurality of microphones.
- 10. Apparatus for detecting and charactrizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 9 further comprising an envelope signal producer for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 11. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 9 further comprising an event space determiner for determining gastrointestinal intestinal event spacing in response to the event duration detection.
- 12. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 9 further comprising a related event detector for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 13. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 9 further comprising an attack characteristic detector for determining an attack characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 14. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 9 further comprising a decay characteristic detector for determining a decay characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 15. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; determining a time at which gastrointestinal event occurs; and determining a spatial position at which the gastrointestinal event occurs, wherein the converting step further comprises receiving the gastrointestinal sound at least one of an array of microphones.
- 16. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 15 further comprising producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 17. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 17 further comprising determining an amplitude threshold of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 18. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 17 further comprising determining gastrointestinal event spacing.
- 19. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 15 further comprising determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 20. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 15 further comprising determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 21. A method for producing an output indication of a charcteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 15 further comprising determining a decay characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 22. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:means for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the gastrointestinal signal for producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a time of a gastrointestinal event; means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a spatial location of the gastrointestinal event; and means for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 23. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 wherein the converting means comprises a plurality of microphones for receiving gastrointestinal sound from a patient.
- 24. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 25. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for determining an amplitude threshold of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 26. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for determining gastrointestinal event spacing in response to the gastrointestinal event time-identifying means.
- 27. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 28. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for determining a decay characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 29. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 22 further comprising means for spatially localizing the gastrointestinal event.
- 30. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:means for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the gastrointestinal signal for producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a time of a gastrointestinal event; means responsive to the digitized gastrointestinal signal for determining a spatial location of the gastrointestinal event; and means for determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 31. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 wherein the converting means comprises a plurality of microphones for receiving gastrointestinal sound from a patient.
- 32. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 33. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for determining an amplitude threshold of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 34. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for determining gastrointestinal event spacing in response to the gastrointestinal event time-identifying means.
- 35. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 36. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for determining a decay characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 37. Apparatus for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 30 further comprising means for spatially localizing the gastrointestinal event.
- 38. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event comprising:a transducer for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; a converter for converting the gastrointestinal signal to a digitized gastrointestinal signal; a gastrointestinal event-time marker generator; a gastrointestinal event spatial location identifier; and a related event detector for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 39. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 38 wherein the transducer comprises a plurality of microphones.
- 40. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 38 further comprising an envelope signal producer for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 41. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 38 further comprising an event space determiner for determining gastrointestinal intestinal event spacing in response to the event duration detection.
- 42. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 38 further comprising an attack characteristic detector for determining an attack characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 43. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 38 further comprising a decay characteristic detector for determining a decay characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 44. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event comprising:a transducer for converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; a converter for converting the gastrointestinal signal to a digitized gastrointestinal signal; a gastrointestinal event-time marker generator; a gastrointestinal event spatial location identifier; and an attack characteristic detector for determining an attack characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 45. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 44 wherein the transducer comprises a plurality of microphones.
- 46. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 44 further comprising an envelope signal producer for producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 47. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 44 further comprising an event space determiner for determining gastrointestinal intestinal event spacing in response to the event duration detection.
- 48. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 44 further comprising a related event detector for determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 49. Apparatus for detecting and characterizing a gastrointestinal acoustical event according to claim 44 further comprising a decay characteristic detector for determining a decay characteristic of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 50. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; determining a time at which gastrointestinal event occurs; determining a spatial position at which the gastrointestinal event occurs; and determining whether neighboring gastrointestinal events are related.
- 51. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 wherein the converting step further comprises receiving the gastrointestinal sound at least one of an array of microphones.
- 52. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 further comprising producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 53. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 further comprising determining an amplitude threshold of the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
- 54. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 further comprising determining gastrointestinal event spacing.
- 55. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 further comprising determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 56. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 50 further comprising determining a decay characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 57. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound comprising:converting a gastrointestinal sound to a gastrointestinal signal; producing a digitized gastrointestinal signal; determining a time at which gastrointestinal event occurs; determining a spatial position at which the gastrointestinal event occurs; and determining an attack characteristic of the gastrointestinal event.
- 58. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 57 wherein the converting step further comprises receiving the gastrointestinal sound at least one of an array of microphones.
- 59. A method for producing an output indication of a characteristic of a gastrointestinal sound according to claim 57 further comprising producing an envelope signal in response to the digitized gastrointestinal signal.
