Claims
- 1. An apparatus for generation of chlorine dioxide, comprising
- a chlorine dioxide generator comprising a solid sodium chlorite composition which has been pretreated with an agent to consume sodium hydroxide,
- a gas line connected to an inlet of said chlorine dioxide generator for providing said chlorine dioxide generator with chlorine in a humidified inert carrier gas, and
- an adsorption means comprising soda-lime in particulate form connected to an outlet of said chlorine dioxide generator, said adsorption means constructed and arranged to selectively remove chlorine from the gas mixture comprising chlorine dioxide and chlorine obtained from said chlorine dioxide generator.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said agent comprises carbon dioxide.
- 3. An apparatus for generation, use, and disposal of chlorine dioxide, comprising
- a chlorine dioxide generator comprising a solid sodium chlorite composition which has been pretreated with an agent to remove sodium hydroxide, said chlorine dioxide generator including an inlet for providing said chlorine dioxide generator with chlorine in a humidified inert carrier gas and an outlet for releasing a gas mixture comprising chlorine dioxide and impurities comprising chlorine,
- an adsorption means connected to said outlet of said chlorine dioxide generator, said adsorption means comprising soda-lime particles constructed and arranged to remove essentially all of the chlorine from such gas mixture to make a purified gas mixture,
- a sterilization chamber for sterilizing a gas impermeable article with chlorine dioxide, said sterilization chamber connected to said adsorption means for receiving the purified gas mixture from said adsorption means, and
- a scrubber connected to said sterilization chamber for receiving effluent gas mixture from said sterilization chamber, said scrubber comprising an aqueous solution comprising sodium thiosulfate and sufficient amount of an inorganic base to maintain alkalinity of said aqueous solution during consumption of the sodium thiosulfate by chlorine dioxide.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said agent comprises carbon dioxide.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said inorganic base comprises sodium hydroxide in a 1:1 ratio with sodium thiosulfate.
