Claims
- 1. A method of applying a solid particulate powder coating to the surface of multiple articles, which method comprises
- moving said articles along a path of movement past a powder spray nozzle,
- intermittently directing a stream of air through a venturi pump and an air amplifier to draw powder from a powder supply source and to cause said powder to flow through a powder supply line,
- directing air-entrained powder from said nozzle onto said articles when said articles are aligned with said nozzle, and
- maintaining a constant flow of air through an air diffuser to said powder supply line downstream of said venturi pump and air amplifier and upstream of said nozzle so as to prevent the accumulation of powder in said line during interruption of the flow of air-entrained powder to said nozzle.
- 2. The method of claim 1 which further comprises
- locating a collection shroud adjacent an article when said article is aligned with said nozzle, and
- applying a vacuum to said collection shroud in order to collect oversprayed powder.
- 3. The method of claim 1 which further comprises applying an electrostatic charge to air-entrained powder flowing through said powder supply line, said charge being applied to said powder upstream of said nozzle.
- 4. The method of claim 3 which further comprises maintaining a second constant flow of air through a second air diffuser to said powder supply line upstream of said nozzle and downstream of a section along said powder supply line at which the electrostatic charge is applied to said powder.
- 5. The method of claim 1 which further comprises fluidizing said powder in said fluid supply source to create a fluidized bed of powder at said source before said powder is drawn from said powder supply source by said venturi pump.
- 6. The method of claim 5 which further comprises mechanically agitating said fluidized powder in said fluidized bed in order to better maintained said powder in a fluidized state.
- 7. The method of claim 6 in which said mechanical agitation of said powder in said fluidized bed is effected by rotating a rotary beater in said fluidized bed.
- 8. Apparatus for applying a solid particulate powder coating to the surface of multiple articles, which apparatus comprises
- a powder supply line containing a venturi pump, and air amplifier, an air diffuser and a discharge nozzle,
- means for moving said articles along a path of movement past said powder spray nozzle,
- means for intermittently directing a stream of air through said venturi pump and through said air amplifier to draw powder from a powder supply source and to cause said powder to flow through said powder supply line, said air-entrained powder being directed from said nozzle onto at least one of said articles when said at least one article is aligned with said nozzle,
- means for maintaining a constant flow of air through said air diffuser to said powder supply line downstream of said venturi pump and said air amplifier and upstream of said nozzle so as to prevent the accumulation of powder in said line during interruption of the flow of air-entrained powder to said nozzle, and
- means for applying an electrostatic charge to air-entrained powder flowing through said powder supply line, said charge applying means being located in said powder supply line upstream of said nozzle.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 which further comprises
- a powder collection shroud locatable in aligned relation with said nozzle, and
- means for applying a vacuum to said powder collection shroud in order to collect oversprayed powder.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said charge applying means comprises a tribocharging means for applying said charge to said powder by friction.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 which further comprises a second air diffuser located in said powder supply line upstream of said nozzle and downstream of a section along said powder supply line at which the electrostatic charge is applied to said powder, and
- means for maintaining a second constant flow of air through said second air diffuser.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 which further comprises
- means for fluidizing said powder in said powder supply source before said powder is drawn from said powder supply source by said venturi pump.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 which further comprises
- means for mechanically agitating said fluidized powder in said powder supply source in order to better maintain said powder in a fluidized state.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 in which said mechanical agitation means comprises a rotary stirrer located in said powder supply source.
