Claims
- 1. In a borehole drilling arrangement employing a fluid circulation system and drill pipe containing a column of fluid, the method of controlling from a surface location the operation of a downhole apparatus by transmitting pressure signals through a signal transmission channel formed by the column of fluid comprising the steps of:
- using a source of independent energy which is independent of the flow of fluid in said circulation system for generating at a surface location in the column of fluid and transmitting to the downhole apparatus a succession of code formatted fluid pressure changes;
- receiving said pressure changes at the downhole apparatus and producing electrical signals responsively thereto; and
- utilizing said electrical signals to control the downhole apparatus said pressure changes being generated in the column of fluid by said source of independent energy irrespective of the circulation of fluid through the drill pipe.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said code formatted fluid pressure changes comprises a series of pressure changes distributed in time in accordance with a predetermined pattern.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said step of receiving said pressure changes at said downhole apparatus and producing electrical signals responsively thereto includes the step of selectively receiving those of said electrical signals that are distributed in time in accordance with said predetermined pattern.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said pressure changes are pressure impulses.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said code is a series of pressure impulses that are periodically spaced one from the other.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein said code is a series of groups of periodically spaced pressure impulses.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the operation of a downhole apparatus includes controlling a valve interconnecting the interior of the drill pipe and the exterior of the drill pipe.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the operation of a downhole apparatus includes controlling an electromechanical apparatus.
- 9. A method of controlling from the surface of the earth the operation of a downhole measuring device by using a borehole telemetering system for transmitting information carrying pressure signals over an elongated fluid column with a fluid circulation system, said column acting as a signal transmission channel in a borehole, said method comprising:
- generating at a first location in the upper portion of said fluid column a succession of discrete groups of pressure variation, said groups of discrete pressure variations being produced by sequentially diverting fluid flow from said circulation system in accordance with a program representing the information to be transmitted to said downhole measuring device, the groups being distributed in time in accordance with the information to be transmitted to said downhole measuring device, each of said discrete groups comprising a sequence of pressure variations at a preselected periodicity, selectively receiving at a second location within said borehole pressure variations having said groups of preselected periodicity producing electrical signal responsive to said pressure variations, and applying said signals to control the said downhole measuring device.
- 10. The method according to claim 9 in which said program is arranged in accordance with a digital code.
- 11. The method according to claim 9 wherein said groups of pressure variations are separated one from the other in time by an amount representing the information to be transmitted to said downhole measuring device.
