Claims
- 1. A method for compression molding a plastic article comprising
- providing a first tool assembly having a male mold associated therewith,
- providing a second tool assembly having a cavity mold associated therewith,
- providing a first fixed cam for moving the first tool assembly relative to said second assembly and a second fixed cam for moving said second tool assembly relative to said first assembly,
- interposing a fluid cylinder comprising a fluid filled chamber and a piston on one of said tool assemblies interposed between one of said fixed cams and the associated tool assembly for urging said one tool assembly toward said other tool assembly to provide a constant limited molding force during the full movement of the associated tooling under the actuation of said cams,
- providing said fluid in said fluid cylinder at a predetermined pressure to provide said constant limited molding force during the forming of the plastic article of the associated tooling under the actuation of said cams,
- providing a charge of extrudate to the cavity of the cavity mold,
- moving the first and second assemblies under the action of said fixed cams to move the first assembly and second mold assembly toward one another to close the mold and provide a constant limited molding force on the charge to compress the charge to form an article.
- 2. The method set forth in claim 1 including interposing said fluid cylinder between said cavity mold and said second fixed cam.
- 3. The method set forth in claim 2 wherein said step of providing said fluid cylinder comprises providing a gas cylinder.
- 4. The method set forth in claim 2 wherein said step of providing said fluid cylinder comprises providing a nitrogen cylinder.
- 5. The method set forth in claim 2 wherein said step of interposing said fluid cylinder comprises providing a hydraulic cylinder, said step of providing said fluid at a constant predetermined pressure in said fluid cylinder comprising accumulator means connected with said hydraulic cylinder.
- 6. The method set forth in claim 3 including sensing the pressure in said gas cylinder, producing a signal and controlling said pressure in response to variation of the pressure signal from a predetermined pressure.
- 7. The method set forth in claim 1 wherein the step of providing said first tool assembly comprises providing a plunger and providing said second tool assembly with a cavity for forming a closure having a base wall and a peripheral skirt.
- 8. The method set forth in claim 7 including the steps of moving the first tool assembly downwardly a predetermined distance under the action of said first fixed cam such that when the force resulting from the forming pressure equals the force of the fluid cylinder, the piston of the cylinder moves to limit the molding force causing the second tool assembly to move until the first tooling assembly moves its full stroke under the action of the first fixed cam.
- 9. The method set forth in claim 7 including providing a second upper cam for lifting the first tool assembly.
- 10. The method set forth in claim 9 including providing a second lower cam for lowering said second tool assembly.
- 11. The method set forth in claim 7 including providing an upper actuator interposed between said upper fixed cam and said first tool assembly and movable by said upper fixed cam toward said second tool assembly.
- 12. The method set forth in claim 11 wherein including providing a lower actuator interposed between said lower fixed cam and said second tool assembly and movable by said lower fixed cam toward said first tool assembly.
- 13. The method set forth in claim 12 said step of providing said first tool assembly includes providing a movable assembly mounted on said upper actuator and a fixed assembly on said upper actuator.
- 14. The method set forth in claim 13 including mounting said cavity for limited axial movement with respect to the lower actuator.
- 15. The method set forth in claim 14 including yieldingly urging said cavity mold upwardly.
- 16. The method set forth in claim 15 including providing said lower actuator with a plunger yieldingly urged toward said cavity mold.
- 17. The method set forth in claim 16 including providing a plug interposed between said piston of said fluid cylinder and said plunger.
- 18. The method set forth in claim 17 including providing centering spring means interposed between said plug and said plunger.
- 19. The method set forth in claim 18 including providing a yoke engaging said cavity mold, said yoke having spaced arms, providing said cavity mold with a groove, providing said actuator with an annular groove having a greater axial width than said arms,
- causing said arms to engage said groove on said lower actuator and said groove on said cavity mold such that the cavity mold has limited axial movement relative to said actuator.
- 20. The method set forth in claim 19 including providing said arms with means thereon yieldingly engaging the periphery of said cavity mold.
- 21. The method set forth in claim 20 including providing handle means on said yoke.
- 22. The method set forth in claim 13 including providing means removably mounting said cavity mold on said lower actuator.
- 23. The method set forth in claim 1 including providing a control system for supplying gas to said gas cylinders including a source of gas under pressure,
- providing control means for sensing the pressure in each said cylinder,
- comparing the pressure with a predetermined pressure and a predetermined minimum pressure value and controlling the pressure to said predetermined value when the pressure exceeds the predetermined maximum pressure or is below said predetermined minimum pressure.
- 24. The method set forth in claim 23 including providing said control means with a pressure control module for sensing said pressures and logic control means providing electrical signals to said control module corresponding to said maximum and minimum pressures.
- 25. An apparatus for compression molding a plastic article comprising
- a first mold assembly having a male mold associated therewith,
- a second mold assembly having a cavity mold associated therewith,
- a first fixed cam for moving said first mold assembly relative to said second mold assembly,
- a second fixed cam for moving said second mold assembly relative to said first mold assemblies,
- a fluid cylinder having a fluid filled chamber at a predetermined pressure and a piston on one of said mold assemblies interposed between one of said first fixed cam and said first mold assembly and said second fixed cam and said second mold assembly and urging said one mold assembly toward said other mold assembly interposed between to provide a constant limited molding force during the full movement of the associated mold assemblies under the actuation of said cams.
- 26. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 wherein said fluid cylinder is interposed between the cavity mold and said second fixed cam.
- 27. The apparatus set forth in claim 26 wherein said fluid cylinder comprises a gas cylinder.
- 28. The apparatus set forth in claim 26 wherein said fluid cylinder comprises a nitrogen cylinder.
- 29. The apparatus set forth in claim 26 wherein said fluid cylinder comprises a hydraulic cylinder.
- 30. The apparatus set forth in claim 26 wherein said first mold assembly comprises a plunger and said second tool assembly comprises a cavity for forming a closure having a base wall and peripheral skirt.
- 31. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 including means sensing the pressure in said gas cylinders and producing a signal and means for controlling the pressure in response to variation of the pressure signal from a predetermined pressure.
- 32. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 including as second upper cam for lifting the upper mold assembly.
- 33. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 including a second lower cam for lowering said lower mold assembly.
- 34. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 including an upper actuator interposed between said upper fixed cam and said upper mold assembly and movable by said upper fixed cam toward said lower mold assembly.
- 35. The apparatus set forth in claim 34 wherein said upper mold assembly comprises a movable assembly mounted on said upper actuator and a fixed assembly on said upper actuator.
- 36. The apparatus set forth in claim 35 including a lower actuator interposed between said lower fixed cam and said lower mold assembly and movable by said lower fixed cam toward said upper mold assembly.
- 37. The apparatus set forth in claim 36 including means for mounting said cavity mold for limited axial movement with respect to the lower actuator.
- 38. The apparatus set forth in claim 37 including means yieldingly urging said cavity mold upwardly.
- 39. The apparatus set forth in claim 38 wherein said lower actuator including a plunger yieldingly urged toward said cavity mold.
- 40. The apparatus set forth in claim 39 including a plug interposed between said piston of said fluid cylinder and said plunger.
- 41. The apparatus set forth in claim 40 including centering spring means interposed between said plug and said plunger.
- 42. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 including a yoke engaging said cavity mold, said yoke having spaced arms, said cavity mold having a groove, said actuator having an annular groove having a greater axial width than said arms, said arms engaging said groove on said lower actuator and said groove on said cavity mold such that the cavity mold has limited axial movement relative to said actuator.
- 43. The apparatus set forth in claim 42 wherein said arms have means thereon yieldingly engaging the periphery of said cavity mold.
- 44. The apparatus set forth in claim 43 including handle means on said yoke.
- 45. The apparatus set forth in claim 38 including means removably mounting said cavity mold on said lower actuator.
- 46. The apparatus set forth in claim 36 wherein said cylinders are gas cylinders, a control system for supplying gas to said gas cylinders comprising including a source of gas under pressure, control means for sensing the pressure in each said cylinder, comparing the pressure with a predetermined pressure and a predetermined minimum pressure and controlling the pressure to said predetermined when the pressure exceeds the predetermined maximum pressure or is below said predetermined minimum pressure.
- 47. The apparatus set forth in claim 46 wherein said control means includes a pressure control module for sensing said pressures and logic control means providing electrical signals to said control module corresponding to said maximum and minimum pressures.
- 48. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 wherein said cylinder is a gas cylinder.
- 49. The apparatus set forth in claim 25 wherein said cylinders are hydraulic cylinders including accumulator means connected to a source of hydraulic fluid and said hydraulic cylinders.
- 50. An apparatus for compression molding plastic articles comprising
- a base,
- a turret rotatably mounted on said base,
- means for rotating said turret,
- an upper annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of upper actuators removably mounted on each said upper segment,
- a lower annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of lower actuators removably mounted on each lower segment,
- a first mold assembly mounted on each upper actuator,
- a second mold assembly mounted on each lower actuator,
- a first fixed upper cam for moving said upper actuator toward said lower mold assembly,
- a second fixed lower cam for moving said upper lower actuator toward said upper mold assembly,
- said first fixed cam and said second fixed cam being operable to move said first mold assembly and second mold assembly toward and away from one another,
- a gas cylinder having a gas filled chamber at predetermined pressure and a piston on one of said tool assemblies interposed between one of said fixed cams and the associated tool assembly to provide a constant limiting molding force during the full movement of the associated tooling under the actuation of said cams.
- 51. The apparatus set forth in claim 50 wherein said gas cylinder comprises a nitrogen cylinder.
- 52. The apparatus set forth in claim 50 including means connecting the gas filled chambers of said gas cylinders with a source of fluid pressure.
- 53. The apparatus set forth in claim 52 including means for sensing the pressure in said gas cylinders and producing a pressure signal and means for controlling the pressure in response to variation of the pressure signal from a predetermined pressure.
- 54. The apparatus set forth in claim 50 wherein said first mold assembly comprise a plunger and said second mold assembly comprises a cavity for forming a closure having a base wall and peripheral skirt.
- 55. An apparatus for compression molding plastic articles comprising
- a base,
- a turret rotatably mounted on said base,
- means for rotating said turret
- an upper annular array of abutting segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of upper actuators removably mounted on each said upper abutting segment,
- a lower annular array of abutting segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of lower actuators removably mounted on each lower abutting segment,
- a first mold assembly mounted one each upper actuator,
- a second mold assembly mounted on each lower actuator,
- a first fixed upper cam for moving said upper actuator toward said lower mold assembly,
- a second fixed lower cam for moving said lower actuator toward said upper mold assembly,
- said first fixed cam and said second fixed cam being operable to move said first mold assembly and second mold assembly toward and away from one another.
- 56. An apparatus for compression molding plastic articles comprising
- a base,
- a turret rotatably mounted on said base,
- means for rotating said turret
- an upper annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of upper actuators removably mounted on each said upper segment,
- a lower annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of lower actuators removably mounted on each lower segment,
- a first mold assembly mounted on each upper actuator,
- a second mold assembly mounted on each lower actuator,
- a first fixed upper cam for moving said upper actuator toward said lower mold assembly,
- a second fixed lower cam for moving said lower actuator toward said upper mold assembly,
- said first fixed cam and said second fixed cam being operable to move said first mold assembly and second mold assembly toward and away from one another,
- a gas cylinder is interposed between the lower actuator and said second mold assembly,
- each said cylinder being filled with gas under pressure at a predetermined pressure to provide a limited molding force during forming of the plastic article by compression.
- 57. The apparatus set forth in claim 56 wherein said upper mold assembly includes a fixed assembly removably mounted on said turret and a movable assembly removably mounted on said upper actuator.
- 58. The apparatus set forth in claim 57 including a second upper cam for lifting the upper mold assembly.
- 59. The apparatus set forth in claim 58 including a second lower cam lowering said lower mold assembly.
- 60. The apparatus set forth in claim 59 including means for mounting said cavity mold for limited axial movement with respect to the lower actuator.
- 61. The apparatus set forth in claim 60 including means yieldingly urging said cavity mold upwardly.
- 62. The apparatus set forth in claim 61 including a plunger yieldingly urged toward said cavity mold.
- 63. The apparatus set forth in claim 62 including a plug interposed between said piston of said fluid cylinder and said plunger.
- 64. The apparatus set forth in claim 63 including centering spring means interposed between said plug and said plunger.
- 65. An apparatus for compression molding plastic articles comprising
- a base,
- a turret rotatably mounted on said base,
- means for rotating said turret,
- an upper annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of upper actuators removably mounted on each said upper segment,
- a lower annular array of segments removably mounted on said turret,
- a plurality of lower actuators removably mounted on each lower segment,
- a first mold assembly mounted on each upper actuator,
- a second mold assembly mounted on each lower actuator,
- a first fixed upper cam for moving said upper actuator toward said lower mold assembly,
- a second fixed lower cam for moving said lower actuator toward said upper mold assembly,
- said first fixed cam and said second fixed cam being operable to move said first mold assembly and second mold assembly toward and away from one another,
- a gas cylinder having a gas filled chamber at predetermined pressure and a piston on one of said tool assemblies interposed between one of said fixed cams and the associated mold assembly to provide a constant limiting molding force during the full movement of the associated tool assembly under the actuation of said cams.
- 66. The apparatus set forth in claim 65 wherein said gas cylinder comprises a nitrogen cylinder.
- 67. The apparatus set forth in claim 66 including means connecting the gas filled chambers of said gas cylinders with a source of fluid pressure.
- 68. The apparatus set forth in claim 67 including means for sensing the pressure in said gas cylinders and producing a pressure signal and means for controlling the pressure in response to variation of the pressure signal from a predetermined pressure.
- 69. The apparatus set forth in claim 68 including a rotary coupling between said source and said fluid cylinders.
- 70. The apparatus set forth in claim 69 wherein said means for sensing pressure is positioned to sense the pressure between said source and said rotary coupling.
- 71. The apparatus set forth in claim 68 wherein said first mold assembly comprises a plunger and said second mold assembly comprises a cavity for forming a closure having a base wall and peripheral skirt.
- 72. The apparatus set forth in claim 56 wherein said upper mold assembly includes a fixed assembly removably mounted on said turret and a movable assembly removably mounted on said upper actuator claims.
