Claims
- 1. An apparatus for correcting distortion in a compact disc (CD) recording and playback system, the apparatus comprising:
- a first circuit for generating an inaudible first reference signal connected to an input of an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter of a recording portion of said system;
- a second circuit for generating a second signal reference identical to said first reference signal; and;
- a comparator circuit connected to an output of a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter of a playback portion of said system and to an output of said second circuit for comparing the first reference signal output by said D/A converter with said second reference signal and generating a difference information signal to an input of said D/A converter,
- wherein said difference information signal is used by said D/A converter to linearize amplitude and frequency responses of said system.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first reference signal is digitally encoded by said A/D converter, the apparatus further comprising:
- means connected to an output of said A/D converter for recording said digitally encoded first reference signal on an information track of a CD; and
- means within said playback portion for reading said digitally encoded first reference signal from said CD information track and inputting same to said D/A converter, wherein said D/A converter decodes said digitally encoded first reference signal.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said difference information signal is indicative of a difference between said compared signals.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said first circuit comprises a memory device in which said first reference signal is stored and a D/A converter for converting said stored first reference signal to an analog signal.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said second circuit comprises a memory device in which said second reference signal is stored and a D/A converter for converting said stored second reference signal to an analog signal.
- 6. A compact disc (CD) recording and playback system comprising:
- an input for receiving signals produced by a signal source;
- a first circuit for generating an inaudible first reference signal;
- an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter connected to said input and said first circuit for digitally encoding said signal source signals and said first reference signal;
- means for recording said digitally encoded first reference signal on an information track of a CD connected to an output of said A/D converter;
- means for reading said digitally encoded first reference signal from said CD;
- a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter connected to said reading means for converting said digitally encoded signals and said first reference signal read from said CD to corresponding analog signals;
- a second circuit for generating a second reference signal; identical to the first reference signal and
- comparison circuitry connected to said second circuit and to said D/A converter for comparing said second reference signal and an analog signal corresponding to said digitally encoded first reference signal and generating a signal indicative of a difference therebetween to said D/A converter to linearize and amplitude and frequency response of said system.
- 7. The system of claim 6 further comprising:
- means for recording said digitally encoded signal source signals on a plurality of audio tracks of said CD connected to said output of said A/D converter; and
- means for reading said digitally encoded signal source signal from said CD.
- 8. The system of claim 6 wherein said D/A converter uses said difference information signal to adjust said system such that an amplitude response of said system is essentially linear.
- 9. The system of claim 6 wherein said first circuit further comprises a memory device for storing said first reference signal.
- 10. The system of claim 6 wherein said second circuit further comprises a memory device for storing said second reference signal.
- 11. The system of claim 6 wherein said first reference signal is identical to said second reference signal.
- 12. The system of claim 6 wherein amplitude versus frequency components of said first reference signal fully cover a range of frequencies of said signal source signals and amplitude versus time components of said first reference signal fully simulate a dynamic range of amplitudes of said signal source signals.
- 13. A compact disc (CD) playback system comprising:
- a laser reader for reading a digital and an inaudible first reference signal signal from a CD;
- a digital-to-analog (D/A) converter connected to said laser reader for converting said digital signal and said first reference signal to a corresponding analog signal;
- a circuit for generating a second reference signal; identical to said first reference signal; and
- comparison circuitry connected to an output of said D/A converter and an output of said circuit for comparing said corresponding first reference signal with said second reference signal and generating a signal indicative of a difference between said compared signals to said D/A converter;
- wherein said D/A converter uses said difference indication signal to make adjustments in said converting such that the amplitude response of said system is linear.
- 14. The system of claim 13 wherein said circuit comprises a memory device for storing said reference reference signal.
- 15. The system of claim 13 wherein said first reference signal is read from an information track of said CD, said information track being located near the center of said CD prior to a plurality of audio tracks.
- 16. The system of claim 13 wherein amplitude versus frequency components of said first reference signal fully cover a range of frequencies of audio signals recorded on a plurality of audio tracks of said CD and amplitude versus time components of said first reference signal fully simulate a dynamic range of amplitudes of said audio signals.
