Claims
- 1. A method for breaking at least one band that may hold a bale of material together comprising the steps of:
- a) positioning a bale having at least one band on a bale receiving table, said table having a generally planar receiving surface.
- bringing said b) into proximity with a rotating band breaking blade having a first and second side surface and an edge portion, said edge portion defining at least one band retention notch wherein said notch is shaped to catch, retain, and break a band when a band has been engaged thereby and further having an anvil located proximate to said blade so as to flank a portion of said first and second side surfaces thereof to localizing shear forces to thereby aiding in breaking said band;
- c) engaging said at least one retention notch of said blade with said at least one band and bringing said at least one band into contact with said anvil; and
- d) breaking said at least one band.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said blade is rotated at a speed no greater than 100 revolutions per minute.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said band is substantially parallel to the axis of the blade.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said anvil is located proximate to a slot defined by said receiving surface and said blade passes there through.
- 5. A band breaking apparatus for breaking one or more bands that may hold a bale of material together comprising:
- a bale receiving table, said table having a generally planar receiving surface and a supporting structure;
- a rotating band breaking blade having a first and second side surface and an edge portion, said edge portion defining at least one band retention notch wherein said notch is shaped to catch, retain, and break a band when a band has been engaged thereby, and said blade being positioned so as to be engagable with said bands when said bale is located on said table;
- an anvil located proximate to said blade so as to flank a portion of said first and second side surfaces thereof whereby a band, after having been engaged by said blade, is brought to bear against said anvil, thus localizing shear forces to aid in breaking said band; and
- a motor operably linked to said blade to impart rotation thereof.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said anvil is located proximate to a slot defined by said receiving surface and said blade passes there through.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said blade has a plurality of notches formed therein.
- 8. A band breaking apparatus for breaking bands that may hold a bale of material together, said apparatus comprising:
- a bale receiving table, said table having a generally planar receiving surface and a supporting structure;
- a rotating band breaking blade, said blade extending partially through a slot defined by said receiving surface and having at least one band retention notch formed in an edge portion of said blade, said retention notch being shaped to catch, retain, and break a band, generally one at a time, when said blade has engaged said band;
- an anvil located at said slot so as to flank said blade whereby said anvil aids said blade in breaking said band by reducing stretching of the band when engaged by said blade; and
- a motor, said motor being operably linked to said blade to cause rotation thereof.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said at least one band retention notch has tapered sidewalls forming a sharpened peripheral wall which aids in breaking said bands.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said edge portion has a tapered peripheral edge portion.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said edge portion has a tapered peripheral edge portion.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said at least one band retention notch has tapered sidewalls forming a sharpened peripheral wall which aids in breaking said band; and
- said blade is constructed from a hardenable material.
