Claims
- 1. An apparatus for determining the position of an armature of an electromagnetic actuator having a coil, the armature being movable to and between first and second positions in response to a current flowing in the coil, comprising:
- means for measuring the magnitude of current in the coil and producing a magnitude signal;
- means for measuring the rate of change of current in the coil and producing a rate of change signal;
- means for measuring the derivative of flux linkage versus current in the coil in response to said rate of change signal and producing a flux linkage signal; and
- means for determining the position of the armature with respect to the coil in response to said magnitude and flux linkage signals.
- 2. An apparatus, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the coil has first and second terminals and including:
- means for measuring the voltage between the first and second terminals; and
- means for measuring a reactive component of the voltage between the first and second terminals, said derivative measuring means producing said flux linkage signal in response to the reactive component and said rate of change signal.
- 3. An apparatus, as set forth in claim 2, wherein said position determining means includes memory means for storing a plurality of positions corresponding to a plurality of magnitudes of current and flux linkage versus current values, and selecting one of said plurality of stored positions in response to the magnitude and flux linkage signals.
- 4. An apparatus for determining the position of an armature of an electromagnetic actuator having a coil, said armature being movable to and between first and second positions in response to a current flowing in the coil between first and second terminals, comprising:
- means for measuring the magnitude of current in the coil and producing a magnitude signal;
- means for measuring the rate of change of current in the coil and producing a rate of change signal;
- means for measuring the voltage between the first and second terminals;
- means for measuring a reactive component of the voltage between the first and second terminals;
- means for producing a flux linkage signal in response to the reactive component and said rate of change signal; and
- means for determining the position of the armature with respect to the coil in response to the magnitude and flux linkage signals.
- 5. An apparatus, as set forth in claim 4, wherein said position determining means includes memory means for storing a plurality of positions corresponding to a plurality of magnitudes of current and flux linkage versus current values, and selecting one of said plurality of stored positions in response to the magnitude and flux linkage signals.
- 6. A method for determining the position of an armature of an electromagnetic actuator having a coil having first and second terminals, the armature being movable to and between first and second positions in response to a current flowing in the coil, comprising the steps of:
- measuring the magnitude of current in the coil and producing a magnitude signal;
- measuring the rate of change of current in the coil and producing a rate of change signal;
- measuring the derivative of flux linkage versus current in the coil in response to said rate of change signal and producing a flux linkage signal; and
- determining the position of the armature with respect to the coil in response to said magnitude and flux linkage signals.
- 7. A method, as set forth in claim 6, including the steps of:
- measuring the voltage between the first and second terminals;
- measuring a reactive component of the voltage between the first and second terminals; and
- producing a flux linkage signal in response to the reactive component and said rate of change signal.
- 8. A method, as set forth in claim 7, wherein said position determining step includes the steps of:
- storing a plurality of positions corresponding to a plurality of magnitudes of current and flux linkage versus current values in the coil, said plurality of position being stored in a memory device; and
- selecting one of said plurality of stored positions in response to the magnitude and flux linkage signals.
