Claims
- 1. A document evaluation device for receiving a stack of documents and rapidly evaluating all the documents in the stack, said device comprising:
- an input receptacle for receiving a stack of documents to be evaluated;
- an output receptacle for receiving said documents after said documents have been evaluated;
- a transport mechanism for transporting said documents, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output receptacle along a transport path;
- a discriminating unit for evaluating said documents, said discriminating unit comprising a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output receptacle, said discriminating unit determining information concerning said documents and processing in excess of about 350 documents per minute;
- a control panel including a touch screen for displaying said information concerning said documents and for providing input signals in response to manual actuation of said touch screen, said input signals including a plurality of mode-entry signals each of said plurality of mode-entry signals corresponding to a respective one of said plurality of operational modes; and
- a controller for coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit, said controller causing said discriminating unit to operate in said plurality of modes in response to said input signals.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said touch screen includes a display and a screen above said display, said controller causing the display to display keys thereon, said controller operably coupling the screen to the displayed keys.
- 3. The currency evaluation device of claim 2 wherein said keys include a continuation key, the actuation of said key causing said discriminating unit to resume operation after stopping upon the detection of an unidentified document.
- 4. The currency evaluation device of claim 2 wherein said discriminating unit comprises an aggregate counter for counting the aggregate value of said documents, means for determining the denomination of a document, means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a document, and means for determining the authenticity of said documents and wherein said control means causes said display to selectively display said aggregate value, denomination, and authenticity.
- 5. The currency evaluation device of claim 4 wherein said means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a document comprises a plurality of denomination counters, each of said counters having an associated document denomination, means for incrementing a selected one of said counters upon the detection of a document having the associated denomination of said selected one of said counters.
- 6. The currency evaluation device of claim 5 wherein said aggregate counter has an aggregate value, and means for incrementing the aggregate value of said documents.
- 7. The currency evaluation device of claim 5 wherein said keys include a plurality of currency denomination keys, said currency denomination keys having an associated denomination, the actuation of said currency denomination keys causing the incrementing of a selected one of said denomination counters.
- 8. The currency evaluation device of claim 7 wherein said discriminating units stops after being unable to identify a document.
- 9. The device of claim 1 wherein said controller is a central processing unit.
- 10. The currency evaluation device of claim 1 wherein said output receptacle comprises a single output bin.
- 11. The currency evaluation device of claim 1 wherein said output receptacle comprises a plurality of output bins.
- 12. The currency evaluation device of claim 11 having exactly two output receptacles.
- 13. A currency evaluation device for receiving a stack of currency bills and rapidly evaluating all the bills in the stack, said device comprising:
- an input receptacle for receiving a stack of bills to be evaluated;
- an output receptacle for receiving said bills after said bills have been evaluated;
- a transport mechanism for transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output receptacle along a transport path;
- a discriminating unit for evaluating said bills, said discriminating unit comprising a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output receptacle, said discriminating unit determining information concerning said bills said discriminating unit processing in excess of about 350 bills per minute;
- a control panel including a touch screen for displaying said information concerning said bills and for receiving operational instructions from a user; and
- a controller for coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit, said controller causing said discriminating unit to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user, said modes including a mixed mode for accepting stacks of bills having a mixed denomination, a stranger mode for accepting bills of the same denomination, and a sort mode for accommodating bills sorted by denomination.
- 14. The device of claim 13 wherein said touch screen includes a display and a screen above said display, said controller causing the display to display keys thereon, said controller operably coupling the screen to the displayed keys.
- 15. The currency evaluation device of claim 14 wherein said keys include a continuation key, the actuation of said key causing said discriminating unit to resume operation after stopping upon the detection of an unidentified bill.
- 16. The currency evaluation device of claim 14 wherein said discriminating unit comprises an aggregate counter for counting the aggregate value of said bills, means for determining the denomination of a bill, means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill, and means for determining the authenticity of said bills and wherein said control means causes said display to selectively display said aggregate value, denomination, and authenticity.
- 17. The currency evaluation device of claim 16 wherein said means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill comprises a plurality of denomination counters, each of said counters having an associated bill denomination, means for incrementing a selected one of said counters upon the detection of a bill having the associated denomination of said selected one of said counters.
- 18. The currency evaluation device of claim 17 wherein said aggregate counter has an aggregate value, and means for incrementing the aggregate value of said bills.
- 19. The currency evaluation device of claim 17 wherein said keys include a plurality of currency denomination keys, said currency denomination keys having an associated denomination, the actuation of said currency denomination keys causing the incrementing of a selected one of said denomination counters.
- 20. The currency evaluation device of claim 19 wherein said discriminating units stops after being unable to identify a bill.
- 21. The device of claim 13 wherein said controller is a central processing unit.
- 22. The currency evaluation device of claim 13 wherein said output receptacle comprises a single output bin.
- 23. The currency evaluation device of claim 13 wherein said output receptacle comprises two output bins.
- 24. A currency evaluation device for receiving a stack of currency bills and rapidly evaluating all the bills in the stack, said device comprising:
- an input receptacle for receiving a stack of bills to be evaluated;
- an output receptacle for receiving said bills after said bills have been evaluated;
- a transport mechanism for transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output receptacle means along a transport path;
- discriminating means for evaluating said bills, said discriminating means comprising a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output receptacle, said discriminating means determining information concerning said bills, said discriminating means processing in excess of about 350 bills per minute;
- a control panel including touch screen means for displaying said information concerning said bills and for receiving operational instructions from a user; and
- control means for coupling said touch screen means to said discriminating means, said control means causing said discriminating means to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user, said modes including a mixed mode for accepting stacks of bills having a mixed denomination, a stranger mode for accepting bills of the same denomination, and a sort mode for accommodating bills sorted by denomination.
- 25. The device of claim 24 wherein said touch screen means includes a display and a touch screen above said display, said control means causing the display to display keys thereon, said control means operably coupling the touch screen to the displayed keys.
- 26. The currency evaluation device of claim 25 wherein said keys include a continuation key, the actuation of said key causing said discriminating means to resume operation after stopping upon the detection of an unidentified bill.
- 27. The currency evaluation device of claim 25 wherein said discriminating means comprises means for counting the aggregate value of said bills, means for determining the denomination of a bill, means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill, and means for determining the authenticity of said bills and wherein said control means causes said display to selectively display said aggregate value, denomination, and authenticity.
- 28. The currency evaluation device of claim 27 wherein said means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill comprises a plurality of denomination counters, each of said counters having an associated bill denomination, means for incrementing a selected one of said counters upon the detection of a bill having the associated denomination of said selected one of said counters.
- 29. The currency evaluation device of claim 28 wherein said aggregate counter has an aggregate value, and means for incrementing the aggregate value of said bills.
- 30. The currency evaluation device of claim 28 wherein said keys include a plurality of currency denomination keys, said currency denomination keys having an associated denomination, the actuation of said currency denomination keys causing the incrementing of a selected one of said denomination counters.
- 31. The currency evaluation device of claim 30 wherein said discriminating means stops after being unable to identify a bill.
- 32. The device of claim 24 wherein said control means is a central processing unit.
- 33. The currency evaluation device of claim 24 wherein said output receptacle comprises a single output bin.
- 34. The currency evaluation device of claim 24 wherein said output receptacle comprises two output bins.
- 35. A method for rapidly receiving and rapidly evaluating all the bills in a stack, and displaying and receiving information concerning the bills via a touch screen, comprising the steps of:
- receiving bills to be evaluated in an input receptacle;
- placing evaluated bills in an output receptacle;
- transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output receptacle means along a transport path;
- evaluating said bills in a discriminating unit, the discriminating unit having a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output receptacle and determining information concerning said bills, said discriminating unit processing in excess of about 350 bills per minute;
- displaying said information concerning said bills and receiving operational instructions from a user via a touch screen; and
- coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit and causing said discriminating unit to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user.
- 36. A method for rapidly receiving and rapidly evaluating all the bills in a stack, and displaying and receiving information concerning the bills via a touch screen, comprising the steps of:
- receiving bills to be evaluated in an input receptacle;
- placing evaluated bills in an output receptacle;
- transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output receptacle means along a transport path;
- evaluating said bills in a discriminating unit, the discriminating unit having a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output receptacle and determining the aggregate value of bills, the denomination of bills, and the authenticity of bills, said discriminating unit processing in excess of about 350 bills per minute;
- stopping the operation of the discriminating unit upon detection of an unidentified bill and resuming operation of the discriminating unit upon the pressing of a continuation key;
- displaying said aggregate value of bills, denomination of bills, and authenticity of bills and receiving operational instructions from a user via the touch screen; and
- coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit and causing said discriminating unit to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user.
- 37. A currency evaluation device for receiving a stack of currency bills and rapidly evaluating all the bills in the stack, said device comprising:
- an input receptacle for receiving a stack of bills to be evaluated;
- a single output bin for receiving said bills after said bills have been evaluated;
- a transport mechanism for transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output bin along a transport path;
- a discriminating unit for evaluating said bills, said discriminating unit comprising a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said output bin, said discriminating unit determining information concerning said bills, said discriminating unit further comprising an aggregate counter for counting the aggregate value of said bills, means for determining the denomination of said bill, means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill, and means for determining the authenticity of said bills, said discriminating unit processing in excess of about 350 bills per minute;
- a control panel including a touch screen for displaying said information concerning said bills and for receiving operational instructions from a user, said touch screen including a display and a screen above said display; and
- a central processing unit for coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit, said controller causing said discriminating unit to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user, said modes including a mixed mode for accepting stacks of bills having a mixed denomination, a stranger mode for accepting bills of the same denomination, and a sort mode for accommodating bills sorted by denomination, said central processing unit causing said display to display keys thereon, said central processing unit operably coupling said screen to said displayed keys, and wherein said central processing unit causes said display to selectively display the aggregate value, denomination, and authenticity.
- 38. A currency evaluation device for receiving a stack of currency bills and rapidly evaluating all the bills in the stack, said device comprising:
- an input receptacle for receiving a stack of bills to be evaluated;
- first and second output bins for receiving said bills after said bills have been evaluated;
- a transport mechanism for transporting said bills, one at a time, from said input receptacle to said output bins along a transport path;
- a discriminating unit for evaluating said bills, said discriminating unit comprising a detector positioned along said transport path between said input receptacle and said first and second output bins, said discriminating unit determining information concerning said bills, said discriminating unit further comprising an aggregate counter for counting the aggregate value of said bills, means for determining the denomination of said bill, means for counting the occurrence of a denomination of a bill, and means for determining the authenticity of said bills, said discriminating unit processing in excess of about 350 documents per minute;
- a control panel including a touch screen for displaying said information concerning said bills and for receiving operational instructions from a user, said touch screen including a display and a screen above said display; and
- a central processing unit for coupling said touch screen to said discriminating unit, said controller causing said discriminating unit to operate in a plurality of modes in response to said operational instructions from said user, said central processing unit causing said display to display keys thereon, said central processing unit operably coupling said screen to said displayed keys, and wherein said central processing unit causes said display to selectively display the aggregate value, denomination, and authenticity.
