Claims
- 1. An apparatus for treating a bone fracture, the apparatus comprising:
an inflatable cuff means adapted to be in operative contact with the circumference of a user's limb at or near the site of a bone fracture, a pump means operatively connected to said cuff means, and a control means for controlling the operation of the pump means, such that said pump means controllably inflates said inflatable cuff means to apply intermittent low pressure pneumatic compression directed radially inwardly at or proximal to the site of the bone fracture at a predetermined pressure and for predetermined periods of compression and recovery, said period of compression being sufficient to cause venous stasis in the region of the fracture and said period of recovery being sufficient to restore venous circulation.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control means maintains a compression time in the range of about 1-20 minutes.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said control means maintains a compression time in the range of about 2-15 minutes.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said control means maintains a compression time in the range of about 4-10 minutes.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said control means maintains a compression time of about 5 minutes.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control means maintains a recovery time in the range of about 0.5-10 minutes.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein said control means maintains a recovery time in the range of about 0.5-4 minutes.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said control means maintains a recovery time in the range of about 2-3 minutes.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said control means maintains a recovery time of about 2.5 minutes.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said control means maintains a recovery time that is about 50% of the compression time.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said pressure in said cuff means is in the range of about 25-60 mmHg.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said pressure in said cuff means is in the range of about 35-50 mmHg.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said pressure in said cuff means is in the range of about 35-50 mmHg.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said pressure in said cuff means is in the range of about 35-50 mmHg.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a pressure relief valve.
- 16. An apparatus for treating a bone fracture, the apparatus comprising:
an inflatable cuff means adapted to be in operative contact with the circumference of a user's limb at or near the site of a bone fracture, a pump means operatively connected to said cuff means, and a control means for controlling the operation of the pump means, such that said pump means controllably inflates said inflatable cuff means to apply intermittent low pressure pneumatic compression directly radially inwardly at or proximal to the site of the bone fracture, said pressure in said cuff means being in the range of about 25-60 mmHg, for a predetermined period of compression, and reducing said applied compression for a predetermined period of recovery.
