Claims
- 1. A method of printing data including encoded image data in a digital format on a photograph including the steps of:
a) receiving image data corresponding to an image in an electronic digital form from an electronic image sensor; b) producing from said digital form of said image data an encoded fault tolerant digital form thereof; c) printing out at least, said encoded fault tolerant digital form of said digital image data using a drop on demand ink jet printing process using an infra-red ink on a surface of a print media while simultaneously printing out said image data as a photographic image representing said image in a visual, human readable form on the same surface of said print media.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said step of producing includes converting said image to said fault tolerant encoded form by forming a Reed-Solomon encoded version of said image.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said fault tolerant encoded form of said image includes applying a high frequency modulation signal to said fault tolerant encoded form such that said permanent record includes repeatable high frequency spectral components.
- 4. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said high frequency modulation signal comprises a checkerboard two dimensional spatial signal.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said step of producing includes first converting said image to a negative of said image and producing said fault tolerant encoded form comprises forming a Reed-Solomon encoded version of said negative of said image.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 5 wherein said fault tolerant encoded form of said image includes applying a high frequency modulation signal to said fault tolerant encoded form such that said permanent record includes repeatable high frequency spectral components.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein said high frequency modulation signal comprises a checkerboard two dimensional spatial signal.
- 8. An apparatus for printing encoded fault tolerant digital data in infra-red on a photograph, said apparatus including:
a) a camera system for electronically imaging an image and for outputting said image in a digital format; b) means for processing said digital format of said output image into a fault tolerant encoded digital form; c) means for printing said image in a human readable form and simultaneously printing said fault tolerant encoded digital form using an ink jet printer, said fault tolerant encoded digital form being printed using an infra-red ink over or interlaced with said human readable form of said image.
- 9. An apparatus for printing encoded fault tolerant digital data in infra-red on a photograph as claimed in claim 5 wherein said means for printing comprises a printer with a page width printhead and a print roll for feeding print media therepast.
