Claims
- 1. An apparatus for positioning at least one cross-pin in a bone through a bone tunnel, said apparatus comprising:
a bone tunnel guide rod having a proximal end and a distal end; a frame member having a base portion and an arm portion, said base portion attachable adjacent to said proximal end of said bone tunnel guide rod; at least one slot in said arm portion, said at least one slot being cammed outwardly toward said base portion relative to said distal end of said bone tunnel guide rod; a drill guide member slidably connected with said at least one slot in said arm portion; and a probe connected to said drill guide member, said probe attachable to said distal end of said bone tunnel guide member such that said probe acts to guide the positioning of the at least one cross-pin in the bone through the bone tunnel; and drilling means for drilling at least one cross-pin hole in said bone tunnel, with said drilling means being supported in position by said drill guide member, said frame member being in attachment with said bone tunnel guide rod, and said bone tunnel guide rod being inserted into said bone tunnel, and said probe being attached to said distal end of said bone tunnel guide rod to position said drill guide member to place the at least one cross-pin hole in a bone through a bone tunnel and allow said drill guide member to adjust to a changing angle and distance relative to a desired cross-pin site.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said arm portion contains two slots.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is fixedly attached to said frame member.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is removably attached to said frame member.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said drill guide member comprises a body and a carriage slidably mounted to said body.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said probe is connected to said body.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said drilling means are supported by said carriage.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said carriage comprises a pin which rides in said at least one slot.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein there are two slots in said arm portion.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said two slots approach one another as they extend along said arm portion.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein there are two slots in said arm portion, and wherein said drill guide member comprises a base and two carriages slidably mounted to said base.
- 12. A method for fixing a ligament in a bone tunnel, said method comprising the steps of:
forming a bone tunnel in a bone, said bone tunnel comprising a first open end and a second open end, with a portion between said first open end and said second open end having a diameter sized to receive the ligament; inserting a bone tunnel guide rod into said bone tunnel, said bone tunnel guide rod having a proximal end and a distal end; positioning a drill guide member slidably connected with a frame member, said frame member being attached to said proximal end of said drill guide member, said frame member having a probe connected to said drill guide member, with said drill guide member being positioned so that said probe is connected to said distal end of said bone tunnel guide rod, with such positioning causing said drill guide member to adjust to a changing angle and distance relative to a desired cross-pin site; drilling at least one cross-pin hole transversely through said bone and across said bone tunnel, using drilling means for drilling said cross-pin hole, said drilling means being supported in position by said drill guide member, with said drill guide member being in slidable attachment with said frame member, said frame member being in attachment with said proximal end of said bone tunnel guide rod, said bone tunnel guide rod being inserted into said bone tunnel, and with said probe being in engagement with said distal end of said bone tunnel guide rod; and inserting at least one cross-pin through said at least one cross-pin hole.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is fixedly connected to said frame member.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is removably connected to said frame member.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is attached to said frame member prior to the step of inserting said bone tunnel guide rod into said bone tunnel.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said bone tunnel guide rod is attached to said frame member after the step of inserting said bone tunnel guide rod into said bone tunnel.
- 17. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of removing said bone tunnel guide prior to the step of inserting at least one cross-pin through said at least one cross-pin hole.
REFERENCE TO PENDING PRIOR PATENT APPLICATION
[0001] This patent application claims benefit of pending prior U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/364,786, filed Feb. 11, 2003 by Gregory Whittaker et al. for METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR FIXING A GRAFT IN A BONE TUNNEL (Attorney's Docket No. MIT-0243 CON), which patent application is hereby incorporated herein by reference.
