Claims
- 1. A press mechanism, comprising:
a clamping frame profiled to receive and retain a sheet of material to be formed, the clamping frame having articulable joints along opposite sides allowing the frame to articulate about at least one axis; a die for forming an article; and engaging members fixed with respect to each other and shaped to receive and retain the clamping frame while allowing the clamping frame to articulate, wherein at least one of the die and the engaging members are capable of movement with respect to each other, and wherein a sheet of material to be formed is held by the clamping frame when engaged with the die.
- 2. The press mechanism of claim 1, further comprising:
toggle clamps attached to the engaging members and shaped to retain the clamping frame when placed in a closed position for pulling the clamping frame including the formed sheet of material away from the die.
- 3. The press mechanism of claim 1, wherein the engaging members are mounted to a lower platen.
- 4. The press mechanism of claim 1, wherein the clamping frame is removable from the press mechanism to allow the material to be heated to a forming temperature.
- 5. The press mechanism of claim 1, further comprising:
a side frame, the side frame including two side pieces, one piece on each of opposing sides of the clamping frame, the clamping frame being mounted to and between the side pieces, and the clamping frame being capable of articulate movement relative to the side frame.
- 6. The press mechanism of claim 1, wherein the frame includes a central articulation axis and at least one additional articulation axis laterally located outward from the central articulation axis.
- 7. The press mechanism of claim 6, wherein the clamping frame is pivoted about the central articulation axis and the additional articulation axis by movement of the die relative to the clamping frame and the engaging members.
- 8. The press mechanism of claim 1, wherein the frame includes a first pair of frame clamp sections located on a first side of the frame and a second pair of frame clamp sections located on a second side of the frame that is opposite the first side of the frame, and wherein each of the pairs of frame clamp sections is joined by a spring-biased pivoting support mechanism which pivots when the sheet of material engages the die.
- 9. A press mechanism, comprising:
a clamping frame profiled to receive and retain a sheet of material to be formed, the clamping frame having articulable joints along opposite sides allowing the frame to articulate about at least one axis; a die for forming an article; and engaging members shaped to receive and retain the clamping frame adjacent end lengths which are parallel to the at least one axis while allowing the clamping frame to articulate, wherein at least one of the die and the engaging members are capable of movement with respect to each other, and wherein a sheet of material to be formed is held by the clamping frame when engaged with the die.
- 10. The press mechanism of claim 9, further comprising:
toggle clamps attached to the engaging members and shaped to retain the clamping frame when placed in a closed position for pulling the clamping frame including the formed sheet of material away from the die.
- 11. The press mechanism of claim 9, wherein the engaging members are mounted to a lower platen.
- 12. The press mechanism of claim 9, wherein the clamping frame is removable from the press mechanism to allow the material to be heated to a forming temperature.
- 13. The press mechanism of claim 9, further comprising:
a side frame, the side frame including two side pieces, one piece on each of opposing sides of the clamping frame, the clamping frame being mounted to and between the side pieces, and the clamping frame being capable of articulate movement relative to the side frame.
- 14. The press mechanism of claim 9, wherein the frame includes a central articulation axis and at least one additional articulation axis laterally located outward from the central articulation axis.
- 15. The press mechanism of claim 14, wherein the clamping frame is pivoted about the central articulation axis and the additional articulation axis by movement of the die relative to the clamping frame and the engaging members.
- 16. The press mechanism of claim 9, wherein the frame includes a first pair of frame clamp sections located on a first side of the frame and a second pair of frame clamp sections located on a second side of the frame that is opposite the first side of the frame, and wherein each of the pairs of frame clamp sections is joined by a spring-biased pivoting support mechanism which pivots when the sheet of material engages the die.
- 17. A press mechanism, comprising:
a clamping frame profiled to receive and retain a sheet of material to be formed, the clamping frame having articulable joints along opposite sides allowing the frame to articulate about at least one axis; a die for forming an article; and engaging members shaped to receive and retain the clamping frame while allowing the clamping frame to articulate, wherein at least one of the die and the engaging members are capable of movement with respect to each other, and wherein a sheet of material to be formed is held by the clamping frame when engaged with the die.
- 18. The press mechanism of claim 17, further comprising:
toggle clamps attached to the engaging members and shaped to retain the clamping frame when placed in a closed position for pulling the clamping frame including the formed sheet of material away from the die.
- 19. The press mechanism of claim 17, wherein the engaging members are mounted to a lower platen.
- 20. The press mechanism of claim 17, wherein the clamping frame is removable from the press mechanism to allow the material to be heated to a forming temperature.
- 21. The press mechanism of claim 17, further comprising:
a side frame, the side frame including two side pieces, one piece on each of opposing sides of the clamping frame, the clamping frame being mounted to and between the side pieces, and the clamping frame being capable of articulate movement relative to the side frame.
- 22. The press mechanism of claim 17, wherein the frame includes a central articulation axis and at least one additional articulation axis laterally located outward from the central articulation axis.
- 23. The press mechanism of claim 22, wherein the clamping frame is pivoted about the central articulation axis and the additional articulation axis by movement of the die relative to the clamping frame and the engaging members.
- 24. The press mechanism of claim 17, wherein the frame includes a first pair of frame clamp sections located on a first side of the frame and a second pair of frame clamp sections located on a second side of the frame that is opposite the first side of the frame, and wherein each of the pairs of frame clamp sections is joined by a spring-biased pivoting support mechanism which pivots when the sheet of material engages the die.
- 25. A press mechanism for forming articles, comprising:
a clamping frame including clamps for clamping and holding material for forming into articles; a die mounted for movement toward and away from the clamping frame, the frame including at least two pairs of frame clamp sections, the at least two pairs of frame clamp sections including a first pair of frame clamp sections being mounted on one side of the frame and a second pair of frame clamp sections on an opposite side of the frame, each of the pairs of frame clamps sections being joined by a spring-biased pivoting support mechanism, the pivoting support mechanism pivoting in response to engagement of the material with the die.
- 26. The press mechanism of claim 25, wherein each of the frame clamp sections has at least two clamping portions, each of the clamping portions being connected by a pivot connector.
- 27. The press mechanism of claim 25, wherein each of the frame clamp sections includes an upper jaw and a lower jaw joined by a pivot connection.
- 28. The press mechanism of claim 25, further including:
a pair of platens, each of the platens being movable toward and away from one another; and a mounting device for mounting the clamping frame between the platens, the die being mounted on one of the platens, the other platen carrying frame engaging supports movable toward and away from engagement with the frame.
- 29. The press mechanism of claim 28, wherein the frame engaging supports include engaging members for engaging the clamping frame to lift and move the clamping frame relative to the die to wrap the clamping frame around the die as the die forms the material.
- 30. The press mechanism of claim 29, further including:
frame extensions mounted to the clamping frame for engagement with the engaging members.
- 31. The press mechanism of claim 30, wherein the frame extensions are mounted at corners of the clamping frame.
- 32. The press mechanism of claim 29, wherein toggle clamps are pivotally mounted on the supports, the toggle clamps being movable from an open position permitting the engaging members to engage the frame to a closed position permitting the supports to pull the clamping frame away from the die.
- 33. The press mechanism of claim 25, wherein the press mechanism includes means for moving the clamping frame toward and away from the die to wrap the clamping frame around the die as the die forms the material and to extract the article from the die by moving the clamping frame away from the die.
- 34. The press mechanism of claim 25, wherein the pivoting support mechanism includes a first pair of brackets, one of each bracket of the first pair of brackets being mounted to contiguous frame clamp sections, and a second pair of brackets mounted to a rail, the second pair of brackets interlocked with the first set of brackets to allow pivotal movement of the frame clamp sections relative to the rail and also limiting the pivotal movement.
- 35. A press mechanism, comprising:
a frame assembly, the frame assembly including a fixed frame portion and an articulated frame portion pivotally fixed to the fixed frame portion, the articulated frame portion profiled to receive and clampingly retain a sheet of material to be formed, the articulated frame portion also including a central pivot axis, at least one lateral pivot axis spaced laterally from the central pivot axis, and free ends capable of being moved relative to the fixed frame portion; a die approximate the frame assembly being movable toward and away from the frame assembly; and a force-imparting mechanism for moving the free ends of the articulated frame portion toward the die, the frame central pivot axis being caused to move in a first direction relative to the fixed frame portion during forming and the free ends being movable in a second direction relative to the fixed frame portion.
- 36. The press mechanism of claim 35, further including:
a pair of platens, each of the platens being movable toward and away from one another, the die being mounted on one of the platens, the other platen carrying the force-imparting mechanism.
- 37. The press mechanism of claim 35, further including:
clamps being movable from an open position, permitting the force-imparting mechanism to engage the free ends of the articulated frame portion to a closed position permitting the force-imparting mechanism to pull the articulated frame portion away from the die.
- 38. The press mechanism of claim 37, wherein the articulated frame portion is pivotally fixed to the fixed frame portion with a spring-biased pivoting support mechanism.
- 39. A method for forming articles, comprising the steps of:
clamping a sheet of formable material in an articulated clamping frame; heating the material to a formable temperature; placing the material in a press mechanism; moving a die of the press mechanism into the material in a first direction; forcing ends of the frame in a direction opposite the first direction; and imparting movement of the articulated clamping frame in both the first direction from movement of the die and in the opposite direction by forcing the ends of the frame.
- 40. The method of claim 39, wherein the die is mounted on one of a pair of opposing platens of the press mechanism, the method further including the steps of:
moving the platens toward one another to first engage the die with the material; and moving the platens closer towards one another causing the movement of the articulated frame.
- 41. The method of claim 40, wherein the articulated clamping frame is supported between the platens for movement of the platens toward one another.
- 42. The method of claim 41, further including the steps of:
providing frame extensions on the ends of the frame and frame engaging supports on the platen opposite the platen with the die; and engaging the frame engaging supports with the frame extensions to force the ends of the frame in the opposite direction.
- 43. The method of claim 42, further including the steps of:
providing clamps on the frame engagement supports; clamping the articulated clamping frame with the clamps; and pulling the articulated clamping frame away from the die by moving the platen away from the die to thereby extract the formed material.
