Claims
- 1. Apparatus for forming a sheet of thermoplastic material into a cylindrical sleeve comprising: a generally cylindrical shaped rotatable support having said sheet of material wrapped therearound so that one end portion overlaps an underlying end portion; vacuum means on said support for holding said underlying end portion thereagainst, a nip roller for holding said overlapping end portion against said support such that the facing surfaces of said end portions are capable of being spaced from each other, pneumatic heating means disposed adjacent said support and having an outlet directed toward said overlapping end portion for separating the overlapping end portion from the underlying end portion to apply hot air against the facing surfaces of said end portions, whereby said facing surfaces are softened; a reciprocable sealing bar mounted adjacent said heating means between said vacuum means and said nip roller; and means for moving said sealing bar into engagement with the overlapping end portion to compress the softened surfaces against one another and form a seam and thereby complete a sleeve.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said heating means includes a source of hot air, means communicating with said source and defining an elongated vertical chamber located adjacent said support; elongated nozzle means communicating with said chamber and providing said outlet adjacent said end portions, whereby said nozzle directs said heated air against said facing surfaces.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said chamber defining means includes an opening facing away from said cylindrical sleeve and further comprising selectively operable means for covering and uncovering said opening.
- 4. Apparatus for forming a sheet of thermoplastic material into a cylindrical sleeve comprising: a generally cylindrically shaped support having said sheet of material wrapped therearound so that one end portion overlaps an underlying end portion; heating means adjacent said support, said heating means having a source of hot air, means communicating with said source and defining an elongated vertical chamber located adjacent said support; said heating means having an elongated outlet nozzle communicating with said chamber and directed toward said overlapping end portion for separating the overlapping end portion from the underlying end portion to apply hot air against the facing surfaces of said end portions, whereby said facing surfaces are softened; said chamber defining means having an opening facing away from said cylindrical sleeve and selectively operable means for covering and uncovering said opening; said covering and uncovering means having (1) a cover pivotally attached to the upper portion of said chamber defining means, said cover being adaptable to close said opening and thereby cause hot air to flow outwardly of said nozzle, and (2) linkage means to operate said cover including a horizontal link pivotally attached to said cover at one end; a vertical link pivotally attached at its upper end to the other end of said horizontal link; means biasing said vertical link downward thereby urging said cover into an open position; a pivotally mounted lever attached at one end to the lower end of said vertical link and having a cam follower at the other end thereof; a continuous rising falling cam engaging said cam follower; means for effecting relative movement between said cam and cam follower, whereby said cover may be closed to selectively direct hot air to said nozzle; a sealing bar mounted adjacent said heating means; and means for moving said sealing bar into engagement with the overlapping end portion to compress the softened surfaces against one another and form a seam and thereby complete a sleeve.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4 in which said horizontal link is pivotally attached to a slide member, said slide member being mounted coaxially on the upper end of said vertical link; and further comprising an adjustment collar threaded to the upper end of said vertical link above said slide member; and means biasing said slide member against said adjustment collar, whereby the length of time said cover is opened may be adjusted.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 4 wherein said cam follower is essentially spherical in shape and said cam defines an arcuate cross-section cam track complementary to said spherical shape.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said moving means includes a rod having said sealing bar at one end thereof; a cam follower rotatably mounted at the other end of said rod; means for biasing said rod radially outwardly from said generally cylindrically shaped support to space said sealing bar from said support; cam means adapted to move said rod radially inwardly toward said support, whereby said sealing bar engages said overlapping end portion and means for effecting relative movement between said cam means and said cam follower.
