Claims
- 1. A method of controlling a data rate of a signal transmitted over a wireless channel during a time frame from a first entity to a second entity, the method comprising:
receiving information at the first entity indicative of a quality measure of the channel; and transmitting the signal from the first entity during the time frame at a data rate that is based on the received information.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving information comprises receiving a requested data rate.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the channel includes a forward link for transmission from the first entity to the second entity and a reverse link for transmission from the second entity to the first entity, and wherein the requested data rate is a requested data rate for the forward link.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving information comprises receiving information based on a quality measure of the channel during a previous time frame.
- 5. The method of claim 2, wherein the receiving a requested data rate comprises receiving the requested data rate from the second entity.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the first entity is an infrastructure apparatus and the second entity is a mobile station.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising selecting the data rate based on the received information.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the selecting comprises selecting the data rate from among a predetermined set of data rates.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein the selecting comprises selecting a channel coding configuration corresponding to the data rate during the time frame.
- 10. The method of claim 7, wherein the selecting comprises selecting a packet format corresponding to the data rate.
- 11. The method of claim 7, wherein the selecting comprises selecting a quantity of user data corresponding to the data rate for transmission during the time frame.
- 12. An infrastructure apparatus configured to transmit a signal to a mobile station over a wireless channel, the infrastructure apparatus comprising:
means for receiving from the mobile station information indicative of a quality measure of the wireless channel; and means for transmitting the signal during a time frame at a data rate that is based on the received information.
- 13. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 12, wherein the means for receiving comprises means for receiving a requested data rate.
- 14. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 12, wherein the wireless channel includes a forward link for transmission from the infrastructure apparatus to the mobile station and a reverse link for transmission from the mobile station to the infrastructure apparatus, and wherein the requested data rate is a requested data rate for the forward link.
- 15. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 12, wherein the means for receiving comprises means for receiving information based on a quality measure of the wireless channel during a previous time frame.
- 16. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 12, further comprising means for selecting the data rate.
- 17. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 16, wherein the means for selecting comprises means for selecting the data rate from among a predetermined set of data rates.
- 18. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 16, wherein the means for selecting the data rate comprises means for selecting a channel coding configuration corresponding to the data rate.
- 19. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 16, wherein the means for selecting the data rate comprises means for selecting a packet format corresponding to the data rate.
- 20. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 16, wherein the means for selecting the data rate comprises means for selecting a quantity of user data corresponding to the data rate for transmission during the time frame.
- 21. An infrastructure apparatus configured to transmit a signal to a mobile station over a wireless channel, the infrastructure apparatus comprising:
a receiver configured to receive from the mobile station information indicative of a quality measure of the wireless channel; and a transmitter coupled to the receiver and configured to transmit the signal during a time frame at a data rate that is based on the received information.
- 22. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 21, wherein the quality measure is a requested data rate.
- 23. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 22, wherein the wireless channel includes a forward link for transmission from the infrastructure apparatus to the mobile station and a reverse link for transmission from the mobile station to the infrastructure apparatus, and wherein the requested data rate is a requested data rate for the forward link.
- 24. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 21, wherein the information is based on a quality measure of the wireless channel during a previous time frame.
- 25. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 21, further comprising a selector element coupled to the receiver and the transmitter and configured to select the data rate based on the received information.
- 26. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 25, wherein the selector element is configured to select a data rate from among a predetermined set of data rates.
- 27. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 25, wherein the selector element is configured to select a channel coding configuration for transmission of the signal during the time frame, wherein the selected channel coding configuration corresponds to the data rate.
- 28. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 25, wherein the selector element is configured to select a packet format for transmission of the signal during the time frame, wherein the selected packet format corresponds to the data rate.
- 29. The infrastructure apparatus of claim 25, wherein the selector element is configured to select a quantity of user data for transmission of the signal during the time frame, wherein the selected quantity of user data corresponds to the data rate.
- 30. A method of requesting a data rate of a signal received at a first entity and transmitted by a second entity transmitting to the first entity over a wireless channel during a time frame, the method comprising:
transmitting, from the first entity, information indicative of a quality measure of the wireless channel during a previous time frame; and receiving, at the first entity, the signal at a data rate during the time frame, wherein the data rate is based on the quality measure.
- 31. The method of claim 30, further comprising measuring a carrier-to-interference ratio for the wireless channel, wherein the information indicative of a quality measure is based on the measured carrier-to-interference ratio.
- 32. The method of claim 30, wherein the first entity is a mobile station and the receiving comprises receiving from an infrastructure apparatus.
- 33. The method of claim 30, wherein the transmitting comprises transmitting information indicative of a desired data rate.
- 34. The method of claim 30, wherein the transmitting comprises transmitting information indicative of a carrier-to-interference ratio for the wireless channel.
- 35. The method of claim 33, wherein the wireless channel includes a reverse link for transmission from the first entity to the second entity and a forward link for transmission from the second entity to the first entity, and wherein the desired data rate is a desired data rate for the forward link.
- 36. The method of claim 33, wherein the receiving comprises receiving a packet having a packet format, wherein the packet format corresponds to the data rate.
- 37. The method of claim 36, wherein the receiving comprises receiving a packet having a packet format that includes a predefined quantity of coding bits for transmission during the time frame.
- 38. The method of claim 36, wherein the receiving comprises receiving a packet having a packet format that includes a predefined quantity of user data bits for transmission during the time frame.
- 39. A mobile station for receiving a signal through a wireless channel from an infrastructure apparatus, the mobile station comprising:
means for transmitting to the infrastructure apparatus information indicative of a quality measure of the wireless channel during a previous time frame; and means for receiving from the infrastructure apparatus the signal at a data rate during a subsequent time frame, wherein the data rate is based on the quality measure.
- 40. The mobile station of claim 39, further comprising means for measuring a carrier-to-interference ratio for the wireless channel to obtain the information indicative of a quality measure.
- 41. The mobile station of claim 39, wherein the means for transmitting comprises means for transmitting information indicative of a desired data rate.
- 42. The mobile station of claim 39, wherein the means for transmitting comprises means for transmitting information indicative of a carrier-to-interference ratio for the wireless channel.
- 43. The mobile station of claim 41, wherein the wireless channel includes a forward link for transmission from the infrastructure apparatus to the mobile station and a reverse link for transmission from the mobile station to the infrastructure apparatus, and wherein the desired data rate is a desired data rate for the forward link.
- 44. The mobile station of claim 41, wherein the means for receiving comprises means for determining a packet format of the received signal, wherein the packet format corresponds to the data rate.
- 45. The mobile station of claim 41, wherein the means for receiving comprises means for determining a channel coding configuration for decoding the signal, wherein the channel coding configuration corresponds to the data rate.
- 46. A mobile station for receiving a signal through a wireless channel from an infrastructure apparatus, the mobile station comprising:
a transmitter configured to transmit to the infrastructure apparatus information indicative of a quality measure of the wireless channel during a previous time frame; and a receiver configured to receive from the infrastructure apparatus the signal at a data rate during a subsequent time frame, wherein the data rate is based on the quality measure.
- 47. The mobile station of claim 46, wherein the information indicative of a quality measure includes information indicative of a desired data rate.
- 48. The mobile station of claim 46, wherein the information indicative of a quality measure includes information indicative of a carrier-to-interference ratio for the wireless channel.
- 49. The mobile station of claim 47, wherein the wireless channel includes a forward link for transmission from the infrastructure apparatus to the mobile station and a reverse link for transmission from the mobile station to the infrastructure apparatus, and wherein the desired data rate is a desired data rate for the forward link.
- 50. The mobile station of claim 47, wherein a packet format of a packet within the signal corresponds to the data rate.
- 51. The mobile station of claim 50, wherein a quantity of user data present within the packet is predefined based on the data rate of the received signal.
- 52. The mobile station of claim 47, wherein the receiver is configured to decode information from the signal using a channel coding configuration, wherein the channel coding configuration corresponds to the data rate.
- 53. The mobile station of claim 47, wherein the receiver is configured to decode information from the signal using a channel coding configuration, wherein the channel coding configuration is predefined based on the data rate.
- 54. A method for high rate packet data communications in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
determining a data rate for data communications on a forward link; transmitting a Data Rate Control (DRC) message on the reverse link, the DRC message requesting data communications at the data rate; and receiving data communications at the data rate.
- 55. The method as in claim 54, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
determining a Carrier-to-Interference (C/I) ratio of data communications received on the forward link; and determining the data rate as a function of the C/I ratio.
- 56. The method as in claim 54, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
determining a Bit Error Rate (BER) of data communications received on the forward link; and determining the data rate as a function of the BER.
- 57. The method as in claim 54, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
determining a Packet Error Rate (PER) of data communications received on the forward link; and determining the data rate as a function of the PER.
- 58. The method as in claim 54, wherein transmitting the DRC message comprises:
transmitting the DRC message on a dedicated channel on the reverse link.
- 59. The method as in claim 54, wherein receiving data communications comprises:
demodulating data communications received on a traffic channel of the forward link in accordance with the data rate; and decoding data communications received on a traffic channel of the forward link in accordance with the data rate.
- 60. A mobile station adapted to communicate high rate packet data communications in a wireless communication system, the mobile station comprising:
means for determining a data rate for data communications on a forward link; means for transmitting a Data Rate Control (DRC) message on the reverse link, the DRC message requesting data communications at the data rate; and means for receiving data communications at the data rate.
- 61. The mobile station as in claim 60, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
means for determining a Carrier-to-Interference (C/I) ratio of data communications received on the forward link; and means for determining the data rate as a function of the C/I ratio.
- 62. The mobile station as in claim 60, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
means for determining a Bit Error Rate (BER) of data communications received on the forward link; and means for determining the data rate as a function of the BER.
- 63. The mobile station as in claim 60, wherein determining a data rate comprises:
means for determining a Packet Error Rate (PER) of data communications received on the forward link; and means for determining the data rate as a function of the PER.
- 64. The mobile station as in claim 60, wherein transmitting the DRC message comprises:
means for transmitting the DRC message on a dedicated channel on the reverse link.
- 65. The mobile station as in claim 60, wherein receiving data communications comprises:
means for demodulating data communications received on a traffic channel of the forward link in accordance with the data rate; and means for decoding data communications received on a traffic channel of the forward link in accordance with the data rate.
- 66. A method for high rate packet data communications in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
selecting a data rate for data communications on a forward link; and transmitting a Data Rate Control (DRC) message on the reverse link, the DRC message requesting data communications at the data rate.
- 67. The method as in claim 66, wherein transmitting the DRC message on the reverse link, comprises:
retransmitting the DRC message on the reverse link.
- 68. The method as in claim 67, wherein transmitting the DRC message on the reverse link, comprises:
transmitting DRC messages on the reverse link, wherein each DRC message requests a selected data rate for data communications.
- 69. A method for high rate packet data communications in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
periodically determining a current maximum data rate for data communications on a forward link; and periodically transmitting a Data Rate Control (DRC) message on the reverse link, the DRC message requesting data communications at the current maximum data rate.
- 70. The method as in claim 69, wherein periodically transmitting the DRC message comprises:
redundantly transmitting a same DRC message on the reverse link during a first time period.
- 71. A method for high rate packet data communications in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:
selecting a first current maximum data rate for data communications on a forward link; transmitting a Data Rate Control (DRC) message requesting the current maximum data rate; selecting a next current maximum data rate for data communications on the forward link; and transmitting a relative reference message indicating a relation of the first current maximum data rate to the next current maximum data rate.
